Adam Wharton has long been deemed hot property in English football having taken the Premier League by storm since arriving at Crystal Palace.

The midfielder has been linked with a litany of clubs both domestically and abroad, ranging from the likes of Liverpool all the way to Bayern Munich.

There is much debate around Wharton's best role within the midfield and how to account for his perceived weaknesses, but at 22 years of age clubs will see he has ample time to work on his flaws.

His strengths make him one of the more unique profiles in the league, with a creative passing arsenal that few other players can match.

All in all, Wharton is a hugely attractive profile for any club but given he's an U23 player with senior England caps he won't come cheap, with £80m seemingly the baseline price for an above average Premier League midfielder these days.

With Mateus Fernandes having left relegated West Ham for £85m, there's every chance Crystal Palace will demand a fee that exceeds that number so any clubs wanting to sign him will need to be highly motivated to secure his signature.

Chelsea are routinely one of Europe's busiest clubs when it comes to the transfer market and they come in as the favourites to land Adam Wharton's signature.

Despite splashing over £100m on Morgan Rogers, they appear far from done in the transfer market as they look to rebuild their underperforming squad in the image of new manager Xabi Alonso.

There are strong rumours that Enzo Fernandez is set to depart Chelsea and Wharton is deemed the most appropriate fit to replace him.

It's easy to see why Chelsea would value a player like Wharton, with the team needing passing quality from deep so sit by Moises Caicedo. Fernandez himself is deficient in that regard, so Wharton would be seen as an upgrade in terms of that specific quality.

Along with Man City, Chelsea are probably the club that is the least hesitant to drop ~£100m on transfer targets so absent of all other factors, that's a reason in itself to believe in them.

Liverpool come in at second favourites to land the England international. The Reds have been linked with Wharton for a while and were the favourites up until Chelsea's recent interest, with man Liverpool fans feeling the midfield is in need of a rebuild.

Liverpool are yet another club with a new manager at the helm, and he's a coach who represents a stylistic deviation from his predecessor, meaning new faces are a necessity.

Liverpool have a somewhat bloated squad and after last season's spending spree, they made need to let a few faces go before they can spend the required fee on a player like Wharton.

There has been significant interest in academy graduate Curtis Jones, who may well leave in the coming weeks which would free up funds.

Given the length of time rumours about Liverpool's interest in Wharton have circulated there is no doubt it's legitimate, but the deal will all depend on where the midfielder fits on their list of priorities, with other positions in need of strengthening too.

Tottenham are third favourites to sign Wharton in a deal that would take Spurs' spending to eye-watering levels.

The North London club have already splashed ~£200m on Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, so it feels strange to see them linked with a move for yet another very expensive midfielder.

However, after two awful league campaigns the squad is arguably in need of a major rebuild and there is a feeling that some of the players do not suit the manager's technical demands.

Crucially, Spurs have a lot of very sellable assets, with Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray and Djed Spence all linked with moves away, while Will Lankshear and Luka Vušković have already been sold.

It seems as though Tottenham will spend a good bit more money before they're done this summer, so this is certainly one to follow.

Naturally, there are a umber of other clubs linked to Adam Wharton, but who is the most likely?

Man United are long time admirers of the midfielder and have been persistently linked for months. Having already signed Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, this might seem like a lazy link, but they supposedly want to sign one more midfielder this summer. Logically, you'd think that will be a more defensive, duel-winning type, but it wouldn't be that shocking if Wharton were the name they went for.

Inter Milan are also reportedly interested too, but given they've had two bids for a far cheaper Curtis Jones rejected, it feels impossible they'd be able to meet Palace's valuation of Wharton. While Man City have also been linked, it seems as though their interest may have pivoted to Moroccan Ayyoub Bouaddi.

Adam Wharton is clearly a wanted man, but his likely destinations might easier to narrow down than you think.

His price seems fairly prohibitive for most clubs on the continent so it's fair to expect him to stay in England, and given how prolifically a lot of clubs have already spent on midfielders we can probably narrow it down further to Chelsea and Liverpool.

Ultimately, though, when it comes to Chelsea, a midfielder seems a little bit higher on their priority list than Liverpool, who have been targeting RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande.

Additionally, and crucially, Chelsea are extremely liberal spenders year after year and will not hesitate to splash a huge sum for a player they like.
