Aintree Day 2 Tips: 25/1 Dark Horse, 13/1 Accumulator & Race-By-Race Best Bets

Yesterday saw Willie Mullins clean up, taking the first four races - all Grade 1s, by the way - in a four timer which would have paid over 100/1.

The other big story of the day was another fall for the increasingly disappointing Constitution Hill. He may have one last chance to redeem himself this season at the Punchestown Festival.

Coming up on Day 2 of the Aintree Festival we have another 7 top class races including the Topham Handicap over the Grand National fences and the return of Jonbon in the Melling Chase.

Read below for all our best bets for the day, plus our 25/1 Dark Horse value pick and 13/1 accumulator.

Day 2 Accumulator

Our Day 2 accumulator tip features three horses:

  • 1.45pm - Dancing City
  • 2.55pm - Romeo Coolio
  • 3.30pm - Jonbon

A £10 stake returns just over £140 if all 3 horses win. Full writeups for each horse can be seen below.

1.45pm - Mildmay Novices' Chase

I’m willing to forgive Dancing City his poor run in the Brown Advisory and don’t really think Cheltenham is his track, having been a shade disappointing last year in the Albert Bartlett too.

However, last year he came to Aintree and put in a great performance to win the Sefton Novices’ Hurdle on this card and looks to repeat the feat 12 months later over fences.

He's versatile on going conditions, has a lot of scope to improve as a chaser, and has the best possible jockey/trainer partnership with Paul Townend & Willie Mullins.

2.20pm - Handicap Hurdle

Steps up in trip now after some good runs in deep handicap hurdles, including a close 2nd in the Imperial Cup at Sandown last time out.

Bumped up 3lbs for that effort, a mark of 130 doesn’t leave him feasibly badly treated and this move to two and a half miles should unlock some more improvement.

Goes well on a quick surface and a similar effort to his Imperial Cup run should see him go close if staying this new distance.

2.55pm - Romeo Coolio

It’s hard to get away from Romeo Coolio at the top of the market off the back of his 3rd in the Supreme at Cheltenham.

Arrived off the back of a break for the Festival curtain raiser, he just didn’t quite get up the hill as strong as the front 2 but put in a creditable placed effort.

Sets the standard here now rated eight pounds above another other horse in the race and trainer Gordon Elliott has been very positive about his chances.

3.30pm - Melling Chase

Might’ve won the Champion Chase had it not been for two bad jumping errors, but Cheltenham is a track he has never performed well at. At Aintree, he's won all three of his starts, including this race has year.

His two main rivals today, El Fabiolo and Protektorat, both come here out of form and have lacked consistency in recent runs.

4.05pm - Topham Handicap Chase

Has yet to tackle these fences but has had a stellar season as a 9 year old putting in some career best efforts, notably when coming 2nd in a Grade Three handicap on Cheltenham Trials Day.

Didn’t stay the 3 miles 1 furlong in the Ultima last time out but should be right at home back down in trip.

A mark of 138 is certainly workable if he takes to these fences.

4.40pm - Sefton Novices' Hurdle

Won his hurdle debut by a wide margin at Kempton over an extended 2.5 miles before Chasing home subsequent Baring Bingham winner The New Lion in the Challow Hurdle.

Dropped to Listed class when last seen at Huntingdon and just held on to beat a subsequent novice winner.

Should relish this step up in trip and brings strong form to the table, plus looks fine on quick ground.

5.15pm - Handicap Hurdle

Ran well to be 3rd in this last year off a 6lbs higher mark and has hinted at a return to form with his recent outings.

A good 2nd in the Scottish County Hurdle was followed up with a solid effort in the Imperial Cup last time out to be 3rd.

Looks well handicapped on his best form and gets on well with Freddie Gingell.
