Champions League Group Stage Prediction

Group A

After a disappointing campaign both domestically and in Europe, Real Madrid will be looking to regain the form that saw them win 3 consecutive Champions League trophies and will face the champions of France and Turkey as well as Belgian runners-up Club Brugge to start their campaign. Despite their bringing in Colombian striker Radamel Falcao from Monaco, Galatasaray doesn’t have the strength to outclass Real Madrid or PSG, but will finish third and find themselves in the final stages of the Europa League.

  1. PSG
  2. Real Madrid
  3. Galatasaray
  4. Club Brugge

Group B

Similar to group A, group B is relatively easy to call where you’d expect german champions Bayern Munich to comfortably win the group. Tottenham are likely to join Bayern in the round of 16, but will need to face difficult away atmospheres against Red Star Belgrade and Olympiakos in order to do so.

  1. Bayern Munich
  2. Tottenham
  3. Red Star Belgrade
  4. Olympiakos

Group C

In a shocking turn of events, Manchester City found themselves in the same group as Shakhtar Donetsk with the likes of Atalanta and Dinamo Zagreb joining them. Manchester City will comfortably win this group and after their impressive league campaign last season where they finished above AC Milan, Inter and Roma I can see Atalanta also progressing past the group stage.

  1. Manchester City
  2. Atalanta
  3. Shakhtar Donetsk
  4. Dinamo Zagreb

Group D

Group D is another relatively easy group to predict as last season round of 16 opponents Atletico Madrid and Juventus will be reunited as well as being joined by Bayer Leverkusen and Lokomotiv Moscow. The quality of Athletico and Juventus will be too strong for the rest of the group, especially after making big recruitments with the likes of Joao Felix arriving in the Spanish capital and Juventus bringing in Ajax captain Matthijs De Ligt.

  1. Juventus
  2. Athletico Madrid
  3. Bayer Leverkusen
  4. Lokomotiv Moscow

Group E

Group E is where we find current European champions Liverpool where they will be joined by last seasons group opponents and Italian runners up Napoli. Belgian champions Genk and Austrian champions RB Salzburg will be the ones fighting for third place and a route through to the later stages of the Europa League and nothing more.

  1. Liverpool
  2. Napoli
  3. RB Salzburg
  4. Genk

Group F

Group F is a lot more interesting and unpredictable than the other groups we’ve looked at so far as it’s where we find Barcelona, Inter, Borussia Dortmund and Slavia Prague. Naturally, you’d say that group favourites are Barcelona but second place is more difficult to predict but after thinking about it we’ve gone for Dortmund to join Barcelona on the basis that Dortmund consistently progresses through to the round of 16, whereas Inter haven’t since 2012. However, after new coach Antonio Conte brought the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez to the San Siro Inter could surprise us.

  1. Barcelona
  2. Borussia Dortmund
  3. Inter
  4. Slavia Prague

Group G

Now we find ourselves at the group that nobody cares about and nobody will probably watch. I see Portuguese champions Benfica winning this group with RB Leipzig beating Lyon and Zenit to second place. After losing key players Tanguy Ndombele and Nabil Fekir, Lyon are lacking the creativity that they possessed last season and will find themselves in third place and compete for the Europa League.

  1. Benfica
  2. RB Leipzig
  3. Lyon
  4. Zenit

Group H

Finally, in group H we find last seasons Europa League winners Chelsea along with last season's Champions League semi-finalists Ajax with french side Lille and Spanish side Valencia joining them. Despite a poor start to the season and losing Eden Hazard, Chelsea have enough quality to win the group with players such as Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham stepping up for the blues. Despite losing key players Frenkie De Jong and Matthijs De Ligt, Ajax will still qualify to the next round after keeping creative winger Hakim Ziyech as well as their coach Erik Ten Hag.

  1. Chelsea
  2. Ajax
  3. Valencia
  4. Lille
