Champions League week 3 round-up

We are officially halfway through this season’s Champions League group stage with some clubs being only 1 game away from qualifying for the round of 16. As usual, we’ve looked at the latest games and provided a brief round-up of how the groups are shaping up after gameweek 3.

Group A

PSG maintained their 100% Champions League start with an emphatic 5-0 win away against Club Brugge, meaning a win in their next game against Real Madrid will seal qualification to the next round. Speaking of Real Madrid, since their opening 3-0 defeat to PSG they have picked up the pace and find themselves in a good position to qualify themselves after their 1-0 win over Galatasaray in Istanbul to leave them in second place on 4 points. However, if they fail to beat PSG and Club Brugge beat Galatasaray, they will drop down to third place.

  1. PSG - 9
  2. Real Madrid - 4
  3. Club Brugge - 2
  4. Galatasaray - 1

Group B

Nothing less than 3 points would do for Tottenham going into gameweek 3 if they had any chance of qualifying for the round of 16, and a 5-0 win over Crvena Zvezda did just that, leaving them in second place after gameweek 3. However, with the reverse fixture in Belgrade being next, Tottenham will need to keep up this form as a defeat will take them back down to third place and 2 points behind Crvena Zvezda with a tough trip to face Bayern Munich in Germany still to take place. Speaking of Bayern, despite an early scare against Olympiacos in Athens, they got the job done and won 3-2 to increase their lead at the top of group B to 5 points.

  1. Bayern Munich - 9
  2. Tottenham - 4
  3. Crvena Zvezda - 3
  4. Olympiacos - 1

Group C

Another team to win all 3 of their opening Champions League games are Manchester City after their 5-1 win over Atalanta, with the Italian’s yet to pick up a single point in their opening 3 games. With group C’s second game finishing in a 2-2 draw between Shakhtar Donetsk and Dinamo Zagreb, if City beat Atalanta away and the reverse fixture between Shakhtar Donetsk and Dinamo Zagreb is a draw, City will qualify.

  1. Manchester City - 9
  2. Dinamo Zagreb - 4
  3. Shakhtar Donetsk - 4
  4. Atalanta - 0

Group D

Atletico left it late against Bayer Leverkusen with a goal from Alvaro Morata in the 78th minute giving them a 1-0 win and keep up the pace with Juventus who beat Lokomotiv Moscow 2-1 in Turin thanks to a brace from Paulo Dybala. If both Atletico and Juventus win the reverse fixtures, they will be guaranteed qualification to the round of 16.

  1. Juventus - 7
  2. Atletico Madrid - 7
  3. Lokomotiv Moscow - 3
  4. Bayer Leverkusen - 0

Group E

Moving to group E, Napoli maintained their position at the top of the group after beating a difficult RB Salzburg 3-2 in Austria thanks to a brace from Dries Mertens and a winner from Lorenzo Insigne. Liverpool kept up the pace with Napoli thanks to an emphatic 4-1 win over Genk in Belgium leaving them 3 points clear of RB Salzburg. If Napoli beat RB Salzburg in their next game they will seal qualification to the next round, and if Liverpool beat Genk they will be in touching distance of qualification themselves.

  1. Napoli - 7
  2. Liverpool - 6
  3. RB Salzburg - 3
  4. Genk - 1

Group F

Inter’s 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund was critical in their race for qualification as it brought them level on points with the German side and into second place on goal difference. Inter’s win over Dortmund was the ideal result for Barcelona after their 2-1 win over Slavia Praha took them 3 points clear at the top of group F.

  1. Barcelona - 7
  2. Inter - 4
  3. Borussia Dortmund - 4
  4. Slavia Praha - 1

Group G

Group G is by far the tightest group this season with only 3 points separating first and fourth place. After their disappointing defeat at home to Lyon during gameweek 2, RB Leipzig bounced back by beating Zenit 2-1 in Leipzig to take them 2 points clear at the top of group G. In the other game, Benfica picked up their first points of the group after beating Lyon 2-1 in Lisbon. After the opening 3 games, group G is wide open and all 4 teams have a strong chance of qualification.

  1. RB Leipzig - 6
  2. Zenit - 4
  3. Lyon - 4
  4. Benfica - 3

Group H

Finally, we move onto group H where Chelsea recorded huge victory by beating Ajax 1-0 in Amsterdam thanks to a late goal from Michy Batshuayi. The victory brings Chelsea to joint top of group H with Ajax, and with 2 of their final 3 games being played at home, Chelsea have a strong chance of qualifying for the round of 16. Chelsea’s chances of qualification were aided by Valencia’s 1-1 draw with Lille in France meaning Chelsea go into gameweek 4 2 points clear of third-place Valencia.

  1. Ajax - 6
  2. Chelsea - 6
  3. Valencia - 4
  4. Lille - 1
