Aston Villa travel to Belgium to take on Club Brugge in the fourth game of the Champions League group stages. Villa are looking to continue their perfect start to this season’s competition.
Date: 06/11/24
Kick-off time: 17:45
Venue: Jan Breydel Stadium
It has been a dream beginning to Aston Villa’s first Champions League campaign under Unai Emery as they find themselves top of the standings after three games. They have recorded three victories against Young Boys, Bologna and most significantly Bayern Munich. It is form that they have carried in the Premier League as well, with their strong start putting them in contention for another top four finish this season. After ten games, they are in sixth with five wins and three draws. They have lost just once in their last 11 games in the Premier League and Europe, though that came at the weekend against Tottenham.
Belgian side Club Brugge will be the team looking to halt their European winning streak. Brugge have one win so far, coming against Sturm Graz on Matchday Two. Their three points has them in 26th, so they will be desperate to pick up some points in order to climb the table. They are second in the Belgian Pro League, four points off the top with seven wins in 13. They have not lost in five league games.
However, they have kept just one clean sheet in their last six in all competitions, which occurred in their most recent game at Leuven. This will give Villa plenty of confidence to cause damage. The visitors have scored in all but two of their games this season and have multiple threats to the Brugge backline. Super sub Jhon Duran is their top scorer with eight goals, closely followed by Ollie Watkins with five, showcasing their strength in depth in the striker position.
Unai Emery’s side have also been dominant defensively as they are yet to concede a goal in the Champions League. In the Premier League, though, they have kept just one clean sheet. There are a few names they will have to look out for, including Andreas Skov Olsen who is Brugge’s scoring leader with five goals. Hans Vanaken is also a threat with four league goals on the season. They have scored just twice in Europe, coming courtesy of Chrsitos Tzolis and Kyriani Sabbe.
This will be the first ever meeting between these two teams in any competition. Villa have played only four competitive fixtures against Belgian opposition, winning one and drawing one. Brugge have a far larger sample size against English clubs, facing them on 28 occasions. However, they have had little success with just six wins.
