Liverpool vs Real Madrid: Preview & Prediction

Liverpool welcome Real Madrid to Anfield for a huge heavyweight clash in the Champions League group stages.

            Date: 27/11/24

            Kick-off time: 20:00

            Venue: Anfield

It has been an excellent start to life as Liverpool manager for Arne Slot, both domestically and in Europe. The Reds lead the Premier League by eight points and have enjoyed a perfect start to the Champions League. They are the only side in the tournament to have picked up maximum points, meaning another victory would leave them in a very strong position to advance to the knockout stages.

Standing in their way is Real Madrid, who have had an underwhelming season so far. However, they trail their rivals Barcelona by just four points with a game in hand, though have work to do in Europe. After four games, Real sit in 18th with just six points. They have already suffered two defeats and cannot afford fall to another if they want to remain in contention for the top eight. As it stands, they are in a play-off spot.

Despite the signing of Kylian Mbappe in the summer, Carlo Ancelotti’s side have not been as dominant as expected. The Frenchman has scored eight goals across the two competitions, but faces the second-toughest defence in the tournament. Liverpool have conceded just one goal in Europe, form they have also displayed in the league. Their six goals allowed is by far the best in the Premier League.

However, the visitors have more than enough talent to trouble their opponents, particularly Vinicius Junior, who has netted four times in the Champions League, including a hat-trick against Borussia Dortmund. Jude Bellingham is always a threat, and he has now scored in two consecutive games.

At the other end, Liverpool are just as strong. Mo Salah has delivered another fantastic campaign with eight league goals and another in Europe. Luis Diaz has also contributed eight across both competitions. They should be confident in scoring against a Real Madrid defence who have not yet kept a clean sheet in the Champions League.

This will be the 12th meeting between these two European giants, but it is Real Madrid who possess the superior record. Liverpool have won three fixtures though have not recorded victory since 2009. They are currently amidst an eight-game winless streak against their opponents which includes seven losses. The most recent game was in March 2023 when the pair faced off in the Champions League Round of 16. The Spaniards were 1-0 winners with Karim Benzema on target to advance 6-2 on aggregate.

            Liverpool

Alisson Becker and Diogo Jota are progressing towards returns in December. Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected back soon, though this game comes too early.

            Real Madrid

Carlo Ancelotti has been dealt a few injury blows. Eder Militao has suffered another ACL injury which will rule him out for the season. Lucas Vazquez and Aurelien Tchouameni will also be out, though are hoping to return at the beginning of December.

            Form Guide

            Liverpool:

In their last five games, Liverpool have been perfect, winning all of them. It has been a dominant stretch for Liverpool as they continue their excellent season. This run started with Carabao Cup action, in which they advanced to the Quarter-finals with a 3-2 win over Brighton. Cody Gakpo scored a brace before Luis Diaz added a third late on. The Seagulls scored twice in the final 10 minutes.

They faced Brighton again just three days later in the league. Liverpool came away with three points from a 2-1 victory. The visitors took the lead early, but goals from Gakpo and Mo Salah turned it around. Attention shifted to the Champions League, where they took on Bayer Leverkusen. They were emphatic 4-0 winners, with a Diaz hat-trick and Gakpo goal completing the scoring.

Aston Villa were the Reds’ next opponents at Anfield and it was a fourth win in a row. They won 2-0, thanks to strikes from Darwin Nunez and Salah. Last time out they travelled to relegation-battling Southampton. They won 3-2, with a second half brace from Salah turning around a 2-1 deficit.

            Real Madrid:

In their last five games, Real Madrid have won three and lost two. It has been a mixed stretch for the European Champions as they have played across two competitions. This run started with Champions League action, in which they came from behind to beat Borussia Dotrmund 5-2. Donyell Malen and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens gave the Germans a 2-0 half-time lead, but two goals in as many minutes from Antonio Rudiger and Vinicius Junior levelled the score. Vinicius completed his hat-trick adding to a Lucas Vazquez strike to seal the win late on.

A return to La Liga saw them thrashed 4-0 at home in El Clasico by Barcelona. Robert Lewandowski (x2), Lamine Yamal and Raphinha were all on the scoresheet. Another European tie followed, this time against AC Milan. They fell to another defeat, losing 3-1. A Vinicius penalty cancelled out an early opener, but Alvaro Morata and Tijjani Reijnders secured three points for the Italians.

Real responded well with a 4-0 win over Osasuna. Vinicius continued his strong form with another hat-trick. Jude Bellingham also found the back of the net. In their most recent game, they took on Leganes, winning 3-0. Mbappe, Federico Valverde and Bellingham were on the scoresheet.
