            PSG vs Atletico Madrid Prediction

PSG have been excellent at home this season, and we expect this to continue against Atletico Madrid. They have remained unbeaten at home in all competitions so far with six wins and one draw. This includes a win against Girona and draw with PSV in the Champions League. PSG are also unbeaten in their last five in all competitions since their defeat to Arsenal in this tournament.

Away from home, Diego Simeone’s side have been suffering as of late, only managing two wins in their last five, including two defeats. In the league, Atletico struggle for consistency, having drawn exactly half of their fixtures on their travels – PSG 2-0 Atletico Madrid

PSG vs Atletico Madrid: Preview & Prediction

PSG welcome Atletico Madrid to the Parc des Princes in what should be an intriguing matchup between two of Europe’s biggest sides.

            Date: 06/11/24

            Kick-off time: 20:00

            Venue: Parc des Princes

Despite the departure of Kylian Mbappe over the summer, PSG have made a strong start to their season leading Ligue 1 by six points after 10 games. However, they have not had as much success in Europe, winning just one of their opening three games and sitting on four points. This leaves them in 19th place with a battle to progress automatically to the knockout stages. Though a win over Atletico could see them significantly climb the table. Anything less would put more pressure on their remaining four games.

It is a similar story for the visitors as they have won one and lost two in Europe so far. In 27th, they are outside of the playoff positions. Although, three points would change their fortunes and put them right back in the mix. Diego Simeone’s side have been inconsistent as of late, failing to win two games in a row in the league since mid-September.

Uncharacteristically for a Simeone team, Atletico are vulnerable at the back. Aside from a first round Copa del Rey victory against lower league opposition, they have kept one clean sheet in seven games. Only five other clubs have conceded more than their eight goals in the Champions League. On the other hand, PSG have scored in all but one of their games this season. Bradley Barcola has had a very impressive season, scoring eight goals. He is his side’s main threat and will be confident in causing damage to the opposing defence. He is still looking for his first European goal of the season.

Goals have been hard to come by for the Spaniards, especially in this competition. They have found the back of the net on just three occasions in three games. They have not fared much better in the league as they have scored 18, the lowest figure in the top four. Antoine Griezmann and summer signing Julian Alvarez both lead the way with four goals in all competitions, and will likely be the main threats for the hosts to contend with.

This will be the first time these two teams meet in the Champions League. They previously played against each other in a pre-season friendly in 2018. PSG have played against Spanish opposition on 41 occasions, most frequently against Barcelona and Real Madrid. They have won 18 of these games. Atletico have faced French opposition just 14 times, with seven wins.

            Team News

            PSG

Lucas Hernandez and Presnel Kimpembe are long-term absentees, whilst Goncalo Ramos is expected to remain out until later this month. PSG should have a fully fit squad to choose from otherwise.

            Atletico Madrid

Marcos Llorente is expected to return from injury this month, though this game could come too soon. Cesar Azpilicueta is also stepping up his recovery. Robin Le Normand is getting closer to a comeback after a brain injury, though the club will remain cautious with his return.

            Form Guide

            PSG:

In their last five games, PSG have won three and drawn two. It has been a mixed run for PSG, though they have not tasted defeat in this period. Their latest game was a home fixture against Lens, in which they won 1-0. Ousmane Dembele scored the only goal of the game in the fourth minute.

This followed another dominant win at Marseille. They were 3-0 winners with goals coming from Joao Neves, Leonardo Balerdi (OG) and Bradley Barcola. The hosts were reduced to 10 men after 20 minutes. Their last Champions League outing saw them held to a 1-1 home draw against Dutch side PSV. Achraf Hakimi cancelled out an earlier opener from Noa Lang.

Strasbourg visited PSG and were on the end of a 4-2 scoreline. Senny Mayulu and Marco Asensio put the hosts two ahead, before the lead was halved. Barcola and Kang-in Lee added to the score. The first game of this stretch was a 1-1 draw away at Nice. Ali Al-Abdi put the home team in front, but PSG got back on level terms shortly after the break through an own goal.

            Atletico Madrid:

In their last five games, Atletico Madrid have won three and lost two. It has been an inconsistent stretch for Atletico as they have been unable to build any momentum. This run started with a 3-1 home victory in the league against Leganes. They fell behind in the first half, but a brace from Alexander Sorloth and a further strike from Antoine Griezmann turned it around.

Attention shifted to European action as they hosted Lille in the Champions League. However, they were defeated 3-1 by their French opponents. Julian Alvarez gave Atletico an early lead, but goals from Edon Zhegrova and Jonathan David (x2) gave Lille the three points. A second loss in a row came at Real Betis. The only goal of the game came in the fourth minute as Jose Gimenez converted into his own net.

Diego Simeone’s side advanced to the second round of the Copa Del Rey with a 2-0 win over lower league side Vic. Alvarez scored a late brace. At the weekend, they hosted Las Palmas in their most recent game. They won 2-0 with goals from Giuliano Simeone and Sorloth.
