Road to the Final: Borussia Dortmund vs Real Madrid

Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund’s run in this competition was much less anticipated than Saturday's opponents, as they topped what was stated as the ‘Group of Death’ (Group F) with 11 points, ahead of PSG, AC Milan and Newcastle United.

The Black and Yellows advanced past Dutch Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven 3-1 on aggregate in the Round of 16 before facing Atletico Madrid in a drama filled quarter-final tie.

Edin Terzic’s side suffered a 2-1 loss in the first leg at the Wanda Metropolitano, however, goals from Julian Brandt, Ian Maatsen, Niclas Fullkrug and Marcel Sabitzer turned the tie around and gave Dortmund a 5-4 aggregate victory.

In the semi-finals, the German Bundesliga outfit met PSG for the third and fourth time in this season’s competition a simply outclassed the Ligue 1 champions, as they won each leg via a 1-0 scoreline with Niclas Fullkrug scored the only goal of the game in the first leg, while Mats Hummels 50th-minute.

Real Madrid

Real Madrid started their Champions League campaign in emphatic fashion as they earned 18 points from six matches in Group C featuring Napoli, Braga and Union Berlin before being drawn-up to play against Lazio in the Round of 16.

Los Blancos comfortably brushed aside the Italian Serie A side via a 3-1 aggregate scoreline before facing recent European foes Manchester City in the quarter-finals. This would be a close and tense affair that Carlo Ancelotti’s men would eventually see out via a penalty shootout (4-3 win) at the Etihad Stadium after a 4-4 aggregate draw.

The semi-finals were also action packed for Real, as they defeated Bayern Munich 4-3 on aggregate thanks to a late Joselu brace at the Santiago Bernabeu to give them a 2-1 victory on the night after Alphonso Davies has scored a stunning goal for Bayern in the 68th-minute of the game.
