        Portsmouth vs Luton Prediction

Portsmouth’s home form should be enough to secure their first win of the season against a newly relegated Luton Town side, who are winless after their first game. Portsmouth have won three of the previous four league meetings between the two teams.

Portsmouth have been the first to score in five of their previous seven, with the Hatters being the first to concede in six of their last seven. All things considered, this looks to be a close affair between the two clubs, with four of the previous five meetings providing less than 2.5 goals in that particular market.

With Luton suffering an opening day defeat to Burnley and Portsmouth having a slight home advantage, we predict Portsmouth will pick up their first win back in the Championship. Portsmouth 1-0 Luton Town

Portsmouth vs Luton Preview & Prediction

The second round of Championship fixtures sees the spotlight shine on Fratton Park as newly promoted Portsmouth take on recently relegated Luton Town, with both teams still searching for their first win this season.

        Date: 17/08/2024

        Location: Fratton Park

        Kick-Off: 12:30 pm

After the first round of fixtures, Portsmouth and Luton Town endured contrasting weekends despite neither picking up an opening-day win. Both sides are former Premier League teams, with Pompey last tasting the top flight in 2010 and Luton Town only last season.

Portsmouth were excellent in their League One winning campaign under John Mousinho last season, obtaining 97 points last season, having only lost five games the entire season. Elias Sorenson was brought in for under half a million in transfer fees, and he rewarded the faith shown by scoring against Leeds United in the opening game. Oxford United’s play-off hero, Josh Murphy, sealed a free transfer to fellow promoted team Portsmouth in the summer.

The home side began their campaign with a beautiful encounter at Elland Road, where six goals were shared between Portsmouth and Leeds United. Pascal Struijk opened the scoring with a penalty inside ten minutes; however, Elias Sorenson equalised to Pompey’s delight. Callum Lang gave the visitors a priceless lead before the half-time whistle sounded. Wilfred Gnonto made it 2-2 before Callum Lang made it a brace with a 92nd-minute penalty. Brendan Aaronsen equalised in the 95th minute for the Lillywhites.

Luton Town’s start to life back in the Championship echoed some of the woes of their debut Premier League season. Rob Edwards was signed to a new deal in the summer amidst speculation he could move elsewhere. The Hatters lost Ross Barkley to Aston Villa for a small fee and their centre-back Gabriel Osho to Auxerre on a free transfer. Luton Town has recruited the likes of Reuell Walters from Arsenal, although early signs suggest they may be settled in the Championship for at least a year or two.

The away side for this fixture began their Championship campaign as the Monday night fixture, and they entertained Burnley at Kenilworth Road. Luton was two goals down in the first half through Josh Brownhill and Wilson Odobert. Tahith Chong grabbed a goal back for Luton Town, although further goals from Vitinho and Dara O’Shea ended Luton’s first night back in the Championship with misery.

        Recent Form

Portsmouth are in excellent form compared to their opponents, as they have only lost once in their last six games - winning three and drawing once. One of the more notable results was the 3-3 draw against Leeds United. Portsmouth’s home form this season will be essential for their survival in this campaign, and they hope to recapture their Fratton Park form from last season. Last season, Portsmouth were excellent at home, having obtained 50 points from 53 available - winning 15, drawing five and losing three.

Last season, Portsmouth were among the leading scorers in the league, having scored 78 in 46 goals, giving them an average of 1.7 goals per game. Defensively, they were solid, only conceding 19 goals in 46 games.

Luton Town will hope to turn their miserable form around for this game if they hope to beat Portsmouth at Fratton Park. The recent meetings suggest that Portsmouth will have the advantage. Portsmouth have won three of the previous four league meetings between the two teams. The home side have been the first to score in five of their last seven, with the Hatters being the first to concede in six of their previous seven.
Luton Town are on a terrible run of form, having only won once in their previous six.

The Hatters have only won once also in their last ten competitive games. The one positive for Rob Edwards is that the previous two meetings between the two sides have resulted in favourable results for Luton Town. Luton Town last beat Portsmouth 3-2 in their most recent league meeting in 2019.
