Southampton look to take one step closer to automatic promotion with victory over Swansea at the Swansea.com stadium. The hosts will hope to keep pace with the teams above them as they try and edge their way into a play-off spot.
After a slow start to the season, Southampton have finally shown that they do not belong in this league. They sit third, 10 points behind leaders Leicester, but are in a great position to fight for automatic promotion. The lunchtime kick-off gives them the opportunity to overtake second-place Ipswich before they play Leicester in a crucial top-of-the-table clash later that evening.
Swansea are languishing in 15th, in no immediate threat of being dragged into a relegation battle, but also seven points away from the play-off places. They have endured an inconsistent season so far, winning eight, drawing nine and losing 10.
If the Swans are to get anything from this game, they will look to the likes of Jerry Yates and Jamal Lowe to fuel them offensively, with the pair scoring six league goals each so far this season. They will also have to tighten up defensively against a very potent attack, with their 41 goals conceded only better than eight other teams.
The visitors have scored 50 goals in this campaign, only Leicester have scored more. Adam Armstrong has found the back of the net 14 times, his tally only bettered by Sammie Szmodics of Blackburn Rovers. He has also chipped in with 11 assists, the most in the league. His 25-goal involvements is a key component to the Saints’ success. Che Adams has contributed seven goals.
This will be the 75th meeting between the two sides. Southampton have got the better of their opponents on 37 occasions, whilst their opponents have won 21 times. The reverse fixture was played less than three weeks ago on Boxing Day, with the Saints hammering the Swans 5-0 at St Mary’s. Joe Aribo, Samuel Edozie and Ryan Fraser were all on the scoresheet before Adams added a fifth in stoppage time.
Southampton have dominated this fixture in recent years, with six wins in the last eight, dating back to 2015.
