Galopin Des Champs won this race in 2023 and followed up in 2024, and is now going off heavily odds on to make it a hattrick of wins in the biggest race of the jumps calendar.

He has had three prep runs this season, which started with a 3rd place in the John Durkan Memorial Chase. Given that neither the track nor the trip were particularly suitable, it was a solid performance, and an improved performance on his 3rd place in 2023.

From there, he followed the same path as last year, winning both the Savills Chase and the Irish Gold Cup Chase at Leopardstown with ease.

Last year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup victory was a straight forward one, with the race playing out as most of Galopin Des Champs’ races do; he stayed prominent, took up the running at the second last, and then powered away to keep on well and put the race to bed well before the finish line.

His main two rivals are Banbridge and Inothewayurthinkin, trained by Joseph O’Brien and Gavin Cromwell respectively. Banbridge is rated nine pounds below the favourite, and has run just once over three miles in a chase; there is a big question mark as to whether he will stay the extra distance with the hill added in to the equation.

Inothewayurthinkin is rated a full 17 pounds below Galopin Des Champs in the official handicaps, and has been beaten by him in all three races they’ve faced off in this year, losing by seven lengths and fifteen lengths in their last two meetings.
