Atalanta vs Marseille: Preview & Prediction

Atalanta host Marseille at Gewiss Stadium this Thursday in the second leg of the Europa League Semi Finals. The first leg ended in a draw which means the tie and a spot in the Final is still there for the taking this week.

              Date: 09/05/2024

              Kick off time: 20:00

              Location: Gewiss Stadium

The second leg of the Europa League Semi Final starts all square with either Atalanta or Marseille within a shot of a place in the Final in Dublin.

Atalanta currently sit sixth in the Serie A after 33 games. La Dea have 17 wins, six draws and ten losses, leaving them on 57 points, three points from Europa League football.

La Dea have only competed in the Europa League twice before this season. Their first outing came back in 2018 where they only made the Round of 32, losing 4 - 3 on aggregate to Borussia Dortmund. The second try in 2022 saw Atalanta make the Quarter Finals where they lost 3 - 1 on aggregate to RB Leipzig.

Marseille currently sit eighth in Ligue 1. In 31 games, Marseille have 11 wins, 11 draws and nine losses which leaves them on 44 points, seven points from European football.

In terms of European football, Marseille have more experience in the Champions League rather than the Europa League. In their six seasons in the competition before this year, Marseille have made one Final back in 2018. Here they faced Atletico Madrid where they lost 3 - 0 in the Final.

Atalanta and Marseille have met just once in their history, with this being the first leg of this Semi Final. Both sides were on the scoresheet in the draw suggesting this fixture could provide goals.

La Dea have been amongst the goals this season, scoring 61 goals in 33 games, an average of 1.85 goals a game. Marseille have also impressed in attack this season, scoring 47 goals in 31 games which gives them an average of 1.52 goals a game.

It was another 2 - 2 draw for Marseille the next time out, this time against Nice. Terem Moffi gave Nice the early lead but Jonathan Clauss equalised on the half hour mark, however, Marseille’s Moumbagna was sent off before halftime.
