The Italian champions Napoli travel to the San Siro to take on an AC Milan team who are involved in the fight to take their crown.
Inter Milan and Juventus long looked like the two teams who would battle for the title, but five wins in six games has seen AC Milan put some pressure on. They currently sit in third, four points behind Juventus and eight behind Inter, though the latter have games in hand. Whilst it will be hard to displace either of the sides above them, their recent form has given them a fighting chance.
Napoli, in contrast, are in a tough battle to make Europe next season, but they have moved up to seventh with a 2-1 win over Verona. They are only two points behind Atalanta in fourth, but will be competing with at least five other teams for Champions League qualification. Seven points separate Atalanta and Torino, who are 10th.
A win for Milan would keep them within touching distance of the top two, but they do not have much room for error the rest of the way. Lose, and any title dreams are most likely over. Away from home, Napoli will view this as a must not lose, as it is imperative they do not lose ground on the teams above them.
Only Inter have scored more goals than Stefano Pioli’s side, and the Italian has a number of attackers he can rely on. Olivier Giroud is the top scorer with 11 of their 46 goals, whilst summer additions and former Chelsea pair Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Christian Pulisic have five and four goals respectively.
Walter Mazzarri’s side should get some joy going forward, however, as their hosts have conceded 27, the most of any team in the top half. Victor Osimhen is their main goal threat with seven, but he is still away at AFCON. Matteo Politano and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia have taken on the load in his absence.
In their last 10 meetings, AC Milan have gotten the better of Napoli four times, including beating them over two legs in the quarter-finals of last season’s Champions League. Despite winning Serie A, Napoli did also lose 4-0 at home to their rivals.
The reverse fixture this season saw the teams share the points, as Milan surrendered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2. Olivier Giroud scored a first-half brace to put his side ahead before half-time, but Matteo Politano and Giacomo Raspadori levelled the score for the hosts.
