Borussia Dortmund vs. Darmstadt: Preview, Prediction & Betting Tips

As the Bundesliga season approaches its conclusion, Borussia Dortmund will face Darmstadt in a match that juxtaposes contrasting fortunes. Scheduled for this Saturday, this encounter is set against the backdrop of Dortmund's European success and domestic inconsistency, while Darmstadt, already condemned to relegation, look to salvage some pride in their final outings of the season.

              Date: 18/05/2024

              Kick-off time: 14:30

              Location: Signal Iduna Park

Borussia Dortmund's domestic campaign has been characterised by inconsistency, leaving them in 5th place with 60 points from 32 games. This position, while securing them a spot in next season's Champions League due to Germany's allocation of five places, is a far cry from their ambitions at the start of the season. The team experienced heartbreak on the final day of last season when they failed to clinch a league title that was within their grasp. This disappointment seems to have lingered, affecting their league performances this term.

Despite their struggles in the Bundesliga, Dortmund's squad, under the stewardship of Edin Terzić, has shown resilience. Key players have underperformed at times, however they remain a formidable force and are peaking at the business end of the season, particularly at Signal Iduna Park, where they have been difficult to beat.

In stark contrast to their domestic form, Dortmund have enjoyed a remarkable run in the UEFA Champions League. This week, they achieved a significant milestone by reaching the Champions League final after an impressive semi-final victory over Paris Saint-Germain. This underdog story has captivated fans and pundits alike, with Terzić's tactical acumen and the players' determination earning plaudits across Europe.

Few anticipated Dortmund progressing this far, especially given their struggles in the league. Their journey to the final has included notable victories against some of Europe’s elite clubs, showcasing their potential when playing at their best. The upcoming final against Real Madrid presents a daunting challenge, but Dortmund’s performances so far suggest they are capable of pulling off an upset.

Given their secure position in the top five and the upcoming European final, Terzić might consider rotating his squad to rest key players. This strategy could provide opportunities for fringe players to make an impact and prove their worth ahead of the next season. Additionally, maintaining momentum and confidence will be crucial, as a poor domestic finish could dampen the spirits ahead of the Champions League final.

Darmstadt’s return to the Bundesliga has been far from ideal. With just 17 points from 32 games, they are rooted to the foot of the table and confirmed for relegation. This outcome, while disappointing, was somewhat expected given their status as a newly promoted side. Manager Torsten Lieberknecht has faced a tough task trying to keep the team competitive against more established Bundesliga outfits.

The season has been a learning curve for Darmstadt, with the squad often finding themselves outmatched in terms of quality and experience. Defensive frailties and a lack of cutting edge in attack have been their main issues, leading to numerous defeats and a goal difference that reflects their struggles.

Despite their predicament, Darmstadt will approach Saturday’s game with a desire to end their season on a positive note. Matches against high-profile teams like Dortmund provide an opportunity for players to showcase their abilities and for the team to test themselves against top-level opposition. Lieberknecht will likely encourage his players to play with freedom, aiming to restore some pride in their remaining fixtures.

The head-to-head record between these two teams heavily favours Dortmund, who have won three of the last five encounters. Darmstadt’s solitary victory in this period offers little comfort given their current form and the strength of their opposition. For Dortmund, continuing this dominance will be essential to ensure a smooth lead-up to their European final.

Saturday’s match between Borussia Dortmund and Darmstadt presents a classic clash of contrasting fortunes. For Dortmund, it is a chance to fine-tune their preparations for the Champions League final while maintaining their league position. For Darmstadt, it represents an opportunity to restore some pride and end their difficult season on a high note. Despite their differing motivations, both teams will be eager to perform well, promising an engaging contest for the fans.

              Team News

              Borussia Dortmund Team News:

Dortmund are doing well on the injury front and come into this game with a fully fit squad to choose from.

With his departure from the club now imminent, Marco Reus could start here given it will be his last ever appearance at Signal Iduna Park. Otherwise, Dortmund should be close to full strength given they need to retain match sharpness in preparation for the Champions League final.

              Darmstadt Team News:

Fabian Holland, Fraser Hornby, Braydon Manu and Clemens Riedel are all expected to remain on the sidelines for the visitors while Klaus Gjasula and Tobias Kempe are both doubtful.

Christoph Zimmermann, however, will be available for selection once again after serving a suspension.

              Form Guide

Borussia Dortmund are coming into this one in decent shape having won three, drawn one and lost one of their last five games, winning their last three on the spin. Their most recent game was a 1-0 win in Paris at the expense of PSG, with Mats Hummels' header following a 50th-minute corner enough to get the job done and send the Bundesliga club to the Champions League final.

That win followed a 5-1 win over Augsburg, which came via goals from Donyell Malen, Marco Reus, Felix Nmecha and a brace from Youssoufa Moukoko, which followed another 1-0 win over PSG, this time with the goal coming from Niclas Füllkrug.

Prior to that, Dortmund were beaten 4-1 away at RB Leipzig, a result that was preceded by a 1-1 draw at home to champions Bayer Leverkusen, with the away side equalising in the final seconds after Füllkrug had given Dortmund the lead.

Darmstadt are, as expected, woefully out of form as they head into this encounter having won one and lost four of their last five games. Their latest outing came in the form of a 3-0 hammering away at Wolfsburg, a comprehensive rout that confirmed their relegation.

The defeat at Wolfsburg followed a 0-1 loss against Heidenheim, a result that followed their only win throughout this five-game stretch: a 2-0 win away at Köln, which came courtesy of goals from Christoph Clarer and Oscar Vilhelmsson.

Prior to that, Darmstadt were beaten 0-1 by Freiburg and 4-0 by Mainz.

              Footy Accumulators Prediction

Neither of these sides have anything meaningful to play for at this stage so it's hardly likely to be a full-throttle encounter. Dortmund do, though, need to stay sharp for their encounter with Real Madrid, and there'll be one or two players who want to either work their way into the manager's thinking for that game or solidify their place in the XI, so there's some added motivation for them from that perspective. It's hard to see Darmstadt taking much from this game given the disparity between the two sides, and Dortmund will no doubt want to hand Marco Reus the sendoff he deserves. Dortmund 3-0 Darmstadt.
