Bayer Leverkusen vs Wolfsburg Prediction & Betting Tips

Bayer Leverkusen host Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, as they look to take one step closer to winning the title.

          Date: 10/03/24

          Kick-off time: 18:30

          Venue: BayArena

Following their 2-0 victory over Koln last weekend, Bayer Leverkusen extended their lead at the top of the table to 10 points. This is because they were able to take advantage of more dropped points by Bayern Munich. Xabi Alonso’s team are still yet to taste defeat this season, with 10 more games to go in their bid to win not only a first title, but to do so without being beaten.

Wolfsburg, in contrast, are enduring a very underwhelming campaign, sitting in 13th just eight points above the bottom three. They have not won a game in the league since mid-December, in what has been a dismal run of form. It does not get any tougher than Leverkusen away, so it would be a shock to see this winless streak end.

However, despite the lack of wins, Niko Kovac’s side have scored at least two goals in three of the last five games, though this Leverkusen defence have conceded just twice in the last six. Jonas Wind is their top scorer with nine, but he has not scored since November. Lovro Majer is second with four. Victor Boniface is still Leverkusen’s leading scorer with 10, even though he has been out for a while. Alex Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong have also stepped up, with 15 goals between them. Grimaldo has also contributed 10 assists, the second most in the division.

Since 2020, the two sides have faced off eight times in the Bundesliga. There has not been much to split the pair, Wolfsburg slightly edging it with three wins. Leverkusen have won twice, with the rest ending in draws. However, Wolfsburg are winless in five, their last victory coming in 2021. They won 2-0 thanks to quick-fire goals from Max Arnold and Lukas Nmecha. The reverse fixture earlier this season ended in a 2-1 win for Alonso’s side. Frimpong opened the scoring early on, but they were pegged back by Maxence Lacroix. Grimaldo bagged the winner.

          Form Guide

          Bayer Leverkusen

In their last five games, Bayer Leverkusen have a 100% record, winning all of them. The league leaders are in unstoppable form at the moment as they continue to beat everyone in their way. It began in the German Cup, as they advanced to the semi-finals with a 3-2 win over Stuttgart. They went a goal down early on, but equalised just after the restart through Robert Andrich. The visitors regained their lead shortly after, but once again they were pegged back, this time by Amine Adil. Jonathan Tah scored a 90th-minute winner to progress.

A return to league action followed as they took on Bayern Munich in a huge top-of-the-table clash. It resulted in a dominant 3-0 victory, with goals coming from Josip Stanisic, Alex Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong. The next two games saw the same 2-1 scoreline, both in Leverkusen’s favour. Firstly, against Heidenheim, Frimpong broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time. Adil doubled the lead late on, before the hosts pulled one back to threaten a comeback.

A home game against Mainz followed a different pattern, as they went 1-0 up early in the third minute through Granit Xhaka. Mainz levelled the score four minutes later, but Alonso’s side took the three points with a winner from Andrich. Their most recent game was a trip to Koln, in which they were 2-0 victors. The hosts went down to ten men early on, and Leverkusen took advantage with goals from Frimpong and Grimaldo.

Before they take on Wolfsburg at the weekend, Leverkusen travel to Qarabag in midweek for the Europa League Last 16 first leg.

          Wolfsburg

In their last five games, Wolfsburg have drawn three and lost two. Niko Kovac’s side have endured a terrible stretch of form, which has them winless. It started with dropped points at home to Hoffenheim, in which they had to come back from behind twice to salvage a 2-2 draw. Lovro Majer scored a brace for the hosts. Their first defeat came at Union Berlin, as Danilho Doekhi scored the only goal of the game in the 25th minute of first-half stoppage time. The game was temporarily stopped due to fan protests.

More dropped points followed, but it came against a good team in Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund took an early lead through Niclas Fullkrug but Yannick Gerhardt got his side back on level terms midway through the second half.

The winless streak continued with another draw, this time against Eintracht Frankfurt. The match finished 2-2, but it should have been more for Wolfsburg as they conceded a last-minute equaliser. Maxence Lacroix broke the deadlock in the second minute, but Philipp Max levelled the score for Frankfurt shortly after. The visitors regained the lead before the break, but could not hold on for the win as Omar Marmoush ensured the points were shared. Third-place Stuttgart were their most recent opponents, but they lost 3-2 at home. They managed to get back to 1-1 in the second half, but Stuttgart took the game away going up 3-1. Lukas Nmecha pulled another back to threaten a comeback, but it was too late.
