Borussia Monchengladbach face a tricky trip to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, hoping to disrupt the hosts’ title challenge.
Die Fohlen currently sit in 12th in what has been an underwhelming campaign so far. They are in no immediate threat of being dragged into a relegation battle, but they are also far from competing for a European place. However, after holding leaders Bayer Leverkusen to a 0-0 draw last weekend, a victory at Bayern could provide the spark they need to make a push in the second half of the season.
Thomas Tuchel’s side trail Leverkusen by two points, in what is now clearly a two-horse race for the trophy. They lead third-place Stuttgart by ten, so it will take an unlikely collapse for them to finish below second. Their victory at the weekend over Augsburg allowed them to cut the gap from four, following the table toppers’ draw.
If Monchengladbach are to get anything from this game, they will have to be at their very best to stop a Bayern attack which has scored 56 league goals this season, more than any other team. Twenty-three of these goals have come from summer signing Harry Kane, who has achieved this feat in just 19 games. Leroy Sane has also been a reliable goal threat, scoring eight goals. Tuchel has also got his defence performing at a high level, conceding just 18. The visitors have struggled mightily in comparison, with only bottom side Darmstadt conceding more than their 38 goals.
The two sides met in early September in the reverse fixture. Bayern came out on top, winning 2-1 thanks to an 87th-minute goal from Mathys Tel. The hosts had taken the lead through Kou Itakura, but Leroy Sane equalised to start the comeback before Tel’s winner.
In the last five seasons, the clubs have played against each other nine times, and it is actually Monchengladbach who have the edge during this stretch. Bayern have won three and lost four. Before their victory in September, they had not beaten their opponents since the 19/20 season.
