Mallorca vs Real Madrid: Preview & Prediction

Real Madrid make the trip to Mallorca looking for three points to strengthen their position at the summit of La Liga.

            Date: 13/04/24

            Kick-off time: 17:30

            Venue: Estadi Mallorca Son Moix

With just eight games remaining, Real Madrid are eight points clear at the top, and are inching closer to securing a third league title in five seasons. Barcelona are second, whilst Girona are in third with both ready to take advantage should Real drop points in the coming weeks. Three points this weekend would help them maintain their comfortable lead or extend it should results go their way. Defeat could leave them cautiously looking over their shoulders at the teams below.

Mallorca are currently 15th, six points clear of the bottom three. Any points in this game would go a long way in securing top flight status for a fourth consecutive season. However, a loss would leave them in a precarious position heading into the final stretch.

The visitors have both the best defence and attack in the entire league, so it will be difficult for Mallorca to get any joy at either end. However, in their last five league games, they have conceded just two goals, highlighting the strong defence they have shown in recent weeks. They could give the Madrid offence a tough time, but the giants have plenty of attacking options they can turn to. The main one being Jude Bellingham, who has scored 16 goals so far. Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo also have 22 goals between them.

Since 2020, these two teams have met six times in La Liga. Unsurprisingly, it is Real Madrid who have dominated the head-to-head, winning five and losing just once. During this time, Real have scored 16 goals and conceded three. Mallorca’s only win came last season at home, and they will hope to repeat this feat once more. The reverse fixture earlier this season ended in a narrow 1-0 victory for Carlo Ancelotti’s side as Antonio Rudiger scored a late winner.

            Team News

            Mallorca

Mallorca should have a mostly fully fit squad to choose from. The only injury concern they have is midfielder Omar Mascarell, who is expected to be out until later this month.

            Real Madrid

Prior to his return from a torn ACL, Thibaut Courtois suffered another knee injury in training which will keep him out for the season. David Alaba is also a long-term absentee. There should be no fresh injury concerns for Carlo Ancelotti.

            Form Guide

            Mallorca

In their last five games, Mallorca have won two, drawn two and lost one. Despite languishing in the bottom half of the La Liga table, they made it to the Copa Del Rey final, which they played in their most recent fixture. They took on Athletic Bilbao but were defeated on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

This followed a goalless draw at seventh place Valencia. It was a very even game, with the hosts just edging possession. However, neither could find the breakthrough with nothing to split the two teams. They picked up a huge win against Granada, narrowly beating them 1-0 at home. They were much the superior team in terms of shot attempts, but it was not until the 85th minute in which the game was won. Antonio Jose Raillo Arenas scored the winner for the hosts.

They were on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline the week before away at Barcelona. They did well to keep it close, but ultimately they were beaten by a strike from 16-year old Lamine Yamal with less than 20 minutes to go. Mallorca games often have a lack of goals, and this was evident once more as they beat high flyers Girona 1-0. Their opponents had more possession, but Mallorca managed to edge them in attempts. They took advantage with one of their two shots on target as Jose Manuel Copete netted the deciding goal in the 33rd minute.

            Real Madrid

In their last six games, Real Madrid have won three and drawn three. Los Blancos are comfortable at the top of the table, helped by three consecutive wins. However, this run started with a pair of draws, the first of which being a 2-2 at Valencia. They were fortunate to not leave empty-handed as they fell 2-0 behind before Vinicius Jr pulled one back on the stroke of half-time. Valencia held their own for the majority of the second half, but could not hold on as the Brazilian winger grabbed his brace to equalise. Jude Bellingham was sent off just before the final whistle.

Focus shifted to European action as they took on RB Leipzig in their Champions League Round of 16 tie. The first leg ended 1-0 in their favour, and they advanced to the quarter finals with a 1-1 draw in the second leg. Vinicius grabbed the opener, but this was quickly cancelled out by Willi Orban. However, the visitors could not find another goal to send the tie to extra-time.

The first of three straight victories was a dominant 4-0 result at home to Celta Vigo. Vinicius scored once more and this was added to by a pair of own goals and a further strike from Arda Guler. Another high scoring game followed in which they won 4-2 at Osasuna. Vinicius’ opener was quickly cancelled out by Ante Budimir, but Dani Carvajal restored the lead. The Brazilian and Brahim Diaz tacked on two more before Iker Munoz scored a consolation. Their most recent game was a 2-0 home win over Athletic Bilbao in which Rodrygo scored a brace.

Real Madrid were held to a 3-3 home draw by Manchester City in the Champions League as goals from Eduardo Camavinga, Rodrygo and Fede Valverde were cancelled out by strikes from Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden and Josko Gvardiol.

            Footy Accumulators Prediction

Mallorca have been involved in many low scoring games, and we expect this to continue at home. They have been solid defensively, but are not too potent in attack. However, they will put up a good fight against Real Madrid, though the visitors should have too much for them – Mallorca 0-1 Real Madrid
