AS Roma vs Sassuolo Predictions & Betting Tips

Roma host Sassuolo in a game which could be very important at both ends of the table. Three points for either side would be huge in the race for Europe and the battle to avoid relegation.

            Date: 17/03/24

            Kick-off time: 14:00

            Venue: Stadio Olimpico

Since the departure of Jose Mourinho in January, Roma have enjoyed a significant upturn in form which has seen them surge up the table. They currently sit in fifth, three points behind fourth-place Bologna and just one ahead of Atalanta in sixth. Roma control their own destiny in terms of securing a European place, but are fighting with a number of teams below them for the final spot. Victory this weekend would only strengthen their position. However, a loss would open the door for the teams below to overtake them.

Sassuolo are in deep trouble as they occupy 19th place. It is setting up for a tense end to the season with up to seven teams in the fight to stay up. This weekend’s visitors are only a point from safety, so a win would go a long way in retaining their top-flight status. Though after losing four consecutive games, they picked up a win in their most recent outing.

Daniele De Rossi’s side are the second-highest scorers in the division with 54, and they will be confident in adding to this tally against the league’s second-worst defence. Paulo Dybala and Romelu Lukaku are the main attacking threats with 22 goals between them.

The last five meetings between the two sides has seen nothing to split the pair, with them both recording two wins apiece. The reverse fixture earlier this season was a 2-1 away win for Roma. The visitors came from behind to pick up the victory after Mattheus Henrique opened the scoring from the penalty spot. Dybala and Rasmus Kristensen turned the game around in the second half.

            AS Roma

Tammy Abraham has been a long-term absentee with a torn ACL, but is trending towards a return potentially sometime this month. Rasmus Kristensen picked up an injury against Monza, which is expected to keep him out for at least a month.

            Sassuolo

Sassuolo have a mostly fit squad to choose from, with the only known absentee being Domenico Berardi who recently suffered a season-ending Achilles injury.

            Form Guide

            AS Roma

In their last five games, Roma have won three and drawn two. They are in a rich vein of form as they fight for Europe, though dropped points in their most recent game. They took on Fiorentina away from home and drew 2-2, but came from behind twice to snatch a draw which included an equaliser at the death. Luca Ranieri put the hosts ahead early on, but Hassem Aouar pegged them back in the second half. Parity was not restored for long as Fiorentina soon retook the lead, before Diego Llorente stepped up in the 95th minute to find the back of the net.

This followed a huge 4-0 win in the first leg of their Europa League Last 16 tie against Brighton. They dominated the English side in terms of the scoreline, but the visitors actually enjoyed a greater share of the ball. Four different players were on the scoresheet in Paulo Dybala, Romelu Lukaku, Gianluca Mancini and Bryan Cristante. They take this commanding lead to England in midweek as they look to advance to the next round of the competition. Lukaku and Dybala were also amongst the goalscorers as they put aside Monza 4-1. Lorenzo Pellegrini and Leandro Paredes scored the other goals.

A home game against Torino saw Dybala notch a hat-trick in a narrow 3-2 win. The Argentine opened the scoring from the penalty spot, but their opponents responded almost instantly. The lead was soon restored after the restart before he added his third. Dean Huijsen put the ball in the back of his own net to give Torino some hope, but that was short-lived as Roma held on for the rest of the game. The first game of this stretch was a 1-1 draw with Feyenoord, which set up their Round of 16 tie with Brighton. They advanced on penalties, coming out on top 4-2 after drawing 2-2 on aggregate.

            Sassuolo

In their last five games, Sassuolo have won once and lost four. Despite the poor run of form, the one victory came in their most recent game. They hosted Frosinone last weekend and beat them 1-0. The visitors dominated in possession, but could not find a breakthrough. Kristian Thorstvedt’s 58th-minute goal was the difference between the two sides.

It was a good response to four straight defeats. The first of which was a 3-0 result at Atalanta. They conceded 27 shots, 13 of which were on target. They ultimately conceded three to Mario Pasalic, Teun Koopmeiners and Mitchel Bakker. This preceded a narrow 3-2 loss at home to Empoli. It was a crushing ending, as they came from behind twice, just to allow the winner in the 94th minute. Goals from Andrea Pinamonti and Gian Marco Ferrari got them back on level terms on two occasions, but they could not see the game out. Sassuolo’s heaviest defeat came at home to Napoli, as they lost 6-1. They actually took the lead, with Uros Racic breaking the deadlock in the 17th minute. The lead did not last long, however, as Amir Rrahmani equalised just over ten minutes later. Victor Osimhen then scored a hat-trick, before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia added a brace.

Fellow strugglers Verona picked up a huge three points against them in a 1-0 win. Both teams enjoyed a fair share of the ball, but it was Karol Swiderski’s late goal for the hosts which proved decisive.
