Atalanta vs Torino: Preview & Prediction

Europe’s top leagues are quickly approaching the final weekends of their respective seasons as there are still places to fight for across the top and bottom of the leagues played. Atalanta hosts Torino next weekend with the home side competing for a European place for next season.

            Location: Gewiss Stadium

            Date: 25/05/2024

            Kick-Off: 5:30 PM

The European places in Serie A are yet to be decided and this weekend will be the round of fixtures to determine who qualified for which competition. The hosts Atalanta could secure UEFA Champions League football next weekend as they play host to a Torino side who could still finish inside a European place.

The European situation in Italy is rather complex and Atalanta could have a huge say in the matter. The Italian side has a Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen in midweek and if they were to win the trophy, they would automatically qualify for the UEFA Champions League regardless of their league position. If they win the Europa League, it opens another spot for Italy next season which would be taken up by Roma. There could be a possibility that Italy will be awarded nine spots which would benefit Torino.

The home side is currently fifth in the league and are three points ahead of A.S Roma in the hunt for the last UEFA Champions League place via league position this season. Atalanta only must avoid defeat against Torino to qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season.

The home side have amassed 66 points this season from 36 games played – averaging 1.83 points per game this season. Atalanta’s league campaign doesn’t officially end until another two weeks because of their rearranged game against Fiorentina. If Atalanta wins both of their games remaining, they can potentially finish third in the league.

Torino has enjoyed a rather successful season in the league this season and is on the outskirts of a potential European place. The away side is currently ninth in the league and only one point behind Fiorentina in that last European place. The team that finishes eighth in Serie A this season will qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League this season, following UEFA’s awarding of an extra place to Italy.

Torino does have a slight disadvantage over Fiorentina, with Fiorentina having played a game less than Torino – Fiorentina’s season ends in two weeks against Atalanta. Fiorentina could potentially give the ninth-placed team in Serie A the UEFA Europa Conference League spot if they win this season’s competition – as Fiorentina would claim a UEFA Europa League spot.

Torino and Napoli are currently competing for those last two European places and therefore Torino would need a win over Atalanta just to make sure they have a potential European place for next season.

In the reverse fixture between the two sides, Torino beat Atalanta 3-0 thanks to a brace from former Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata.

            Atalanta Team News

Emil Holm, Sead Kolasinac and Marten de Roon are all unavailable for Atalanta. Teun Koopmeiners should be available following his recent suspension.

            Torino Team News

Per Schuurs, Koffi Djidji and Gvidas Gineitis are all unavailable for Torino. Matteo Lovato and Ricardo Rodriguez are suspension risks for Torino.

            RECENT FORM

The recent history between the two teams suggests that Atalanta will be favourites against Torino. The home side has won three out of the last five league meetings between the two sides, losing once and drawing once.

This fixture provides an average of 3.05 goals per game between the two teams. In the last 20 meetings between the two teams, the form is evenly split between the respective teams. Both Atalanta and Torino have won seven games each and the remaining six games ended in a draw.

The fixture when played at Atalanta has favoured the home side in recent years. Torino have failed to beat Atalanta in their last three visits to the Gewiss Stadium, however, they’ve only lost once in the last four. Two of the previous four fixtures have ended in a high-scoring draw, which included a 4-4 draw in 2022.

Torino’s earlier win over Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium took place in 2019. Torino were the 3-2 winners over Atalanta that day thanks to goals from Armando Izzo, Alex Berenguer and Kevin Bonifazi. Torino have only won twice in the last ten league encounters at the Gewiss Stadium.

There have only been two dismissals in the last ten league meetings between the two teams. Both dismissals have fallen to Torino, in which it took place in the same fixture. Torino were reduced to nine men in a 7-0 loss at home to Atalanta in 2020.

Atalanta’s home form has been nothing short of exceptional this season. Atalanta has two home games left, after 17 games played at the Gewiss Stadium, the home side has won 12, drawn twice and lost only three. Atalanta have won 71% of their home games this season and defensively they’ve been brilliant having conceded 0.76 goals per game.

Atalanta have averaged 2.24 points per game this season and they’ve won three out of their last five home games. The home side have won their last five games in Serie A in general and have kept a clean sheet in 53% of their games at Gewiss Stadium. In their last home league game, Atalanta secured a season-defining win in a 2-1 win over A.S Roma.

Torino’s away form isn’t the strongest in general, as they approach one of the best of the best home records in Serie A. Torino have played 18 games away from home this season, having won five, lost eight and drawing five. Torino have won 28% of their away games this season, averaging 1.11 points per game on their travels this season.

The away side has an unwanted record of failing to score in 39% of their away fixtures this season, as well as keeping a clean sheet in 28% on their travels. In their most recent away game, Torino were 2-1 winners over Verona thanks to goals from Pietro Pellegri and Zanos Savva. Torino have won two out of their last five league games away from home.
