Two top-four teams go head-to-head this weekend in a game which will have big implications in the title race and battle for Champions League qualification.

Inter Milan sit second in the league, one point and one place behind leaders Juventus with a game in hand. A victory would see them leapfrog their rivals, and extend the gap to third place AC Milan to nine points. Fiorentina have also enjoyed a good season so far, currently occupying the fourth and final Champions League place. It will be a tough task to catch up to the top three as they sit 11 points behind, but fourth place is up for grabs. Just three points separate Fiorentina in fourth and Napoli in ninth.

Simone Inzaghi’s side have by far the league’s best attack, scoring 49 goals in 20 games. They also boast the most stubborn defence, only conceding 10 so far. This is in large part thanks so the sensational form of striker Lautaro Martinez, who has found the back of the net 18 times in the league. He has 20 in all competitions. This puts him way out in front of the goal-scoring charts, with Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic the closest with 11. Inter winger Hakan Çalhanoglu is also in the top five with nine goals.

Nicolas Gonzales and Giacomo Bonaventura have scored six goals apiece for Fiorentina, and head coach Vincenzo Italiano will be looking to the pair to help break down the league’s toughest defence.

In 30 meetings, Inter have dominated, winning 17 and losing just seven. The reverse fixture earlier this season saw them thrash their opponents 4-0 at home, with goals from Thuram and Çalhanoglu adding to a Martinez brace. Since 2020, Fiorentina have won just one matchup, which came towards the end of last season.

            Fiorentina Team News

Vincenzo Italiano has a relatively clean injury report with just two long-term absentees. Dodo is out for the season with an ACL injury, whilst Gaetano Castrovilli is out for the foreseeable future with an injured Achilles tendon. Christian Kouame is away on international duty.

            Inter Milan Team News

Inter also have only two injured players. Juan Cuadrado is out until March with an Achilles tendon injury, whilst Allesandro Bastoni is a doubt. Every other player should be available.

            Form Guide

            Fiorentina

In their last five games, Fiorentina have won once, lost twice and drawn twice. After two consecutive 1-0 victories, they opened this stretch of games with another 1-0 win against Torino. An 83rd-minute strike from Luca Ranieri was the difference between the two sides.

They were then on the wrong end of a 1-0 deficit as they fell to struggling Sassuolo, who scored an early opener. Their goalscoring issues continued into their Supercoppa Italiana quarter-final tie with Bologna as they drew 0-0. They did advance to the semi-finals on penalties, winning 5-4.

Last time out in the league they hosted Udinese, and despite falling behind twice, they managed to salvage a point with an M’Bala Nzola penalty in the 87th minute. Their most recent game was the semi-final of the Supercoppa Italiana against Napoli, but they crashed out of the tournament with a 3-0 defeat.

            Inter Milan

In their last five games, Inter Milan have won four and drawn one. Having lost just once in the league all season, the Nerrazurri continued their dominance in this recent stretch of fixtures. They began this period with a 2-0 victory over Lecce just before Christmas, with Yann Aurel Bisseck and Nicolo Barella on the scoresheet.

A trip to Genoa resulted in their first dropped points since late November as Ragu Dragusin cancelled out Marko Arnautovic’s opener. They quickly got back to winning ways at home to Verona, who occupy a place in the bottom three. However, it took a 93rd-minute winner from Davide Frattesi to secure all three points after Thomas Henry equalised in the second half.

They enjoyed a much more comfortable outing at Monza, scoring five goals with braces from Çalhanoglu and Martinez adding to Thuram’s late strike. The hosts scored a penalty as consolation.

Away from Serie A, their most recent game saw them advance to the final of the Supercoppa Italiana final, beating Lazio 3-0. Thuram, Çalhanoglu and Fratessi scored the goals. They will face Napoli in the final on Monday 22nd January.
