Juventus vs Salernitana: Preview, Prediction & Betting Tips

The Serie A season is reaching its climax in the next three weeks as teams battle for places up and down the table. Juventus are seemingly within touching distance of the UEFA Champions League as they host a Salernitana side who are hoping to restore some pride following their disappointing season.

          Location: Allianz Stadium

          Date: 12/05/2024

          Kick-Off: 5:00 PM

Juventus will more than likely be making a return to play in the UEFA Champions League next season. The Old Lady are currently third place in the league, six points clear of Roma who are fifth and not certain of their participation in next year’s competition.

The home side realistically only needs four points from their remaining three games, and they obviously can be assured if teams around them also fail to capitalise on their games. Massimiliano Allegri has also guided the Old Lady to a Coppa Italia final in which they will face fellow Champions League-chasing opponents Atalanta.

Juventus can still mathematically secure a top-two position in the league with three games to go. The home side are five points adrift of nearest rivals AC Milan and would require Milan to drop points in two of their final three games.

Juventus could still have a say on the final UEFA Champions League places as they face fellow European chasers Bologna away from home in the penultimate game of the season. The visitors, Salernitana are essentially playing to restore some pride at this stage of the season. The away side is firmly rooted to the bottom of the table after 35 games played this season.

Unfortunately for Salernitana, the season could end up with a worse experience than the one they are already facing. The visitors are on course to record the worst-ever Serie A points tally. The record is currently held by Chievo, however, in Chievo’s case, they have deducted three points at the start of their season through financial irregularities.

The away side have 16 points this season and failure to win any of their final three games would see them either equal or break Chievo’s unwanted record.

It is worth noting that this is of writing and the points tally could improve for the away side as they face Atalanta before their scheduled game against Juventus.

In the previous league meeting between the two teams, Salernitana ran Juventus close but was eventually defeated 2-1 by the Old Lady.

          RECENT FORM

The recent history between the two sides suggests that unsurprisingly Juventus will be the favourites for their game against Salernitana at the weekend. Juventus have won four out of the last five competitive fixtures between the two teams, including a most recent Coppa Italia victory in January.

The game in the Coppa Italia was a far more emphatic win for Juventus and Allegri as a 6-1 scoreline ensured a safe passage into the next round for this year’s finalists. This game provides goals as this fixture has provided a goal average of 3.5 scored between the two sides.

Juventus and Salernitana have faced each other only on eight occasions in both of their respective histories. Juventus have the historical advantage, having won six, drawing once and losing only one of the eight games played. Salernitana has never beaten Juventus at home in their club’s history.

Interestingly, the only time Salernitana has beaten Juventus was in 1999. Juventus at that time were boasting players such as Antonio Conte and Zinedine Zidane, so it could be considered a rather impressive result from Salernitana that year.

In the eight competitive meetings between the two sides, there have been dismissals in two of those games. In the most recent league game, Salernitana were down to ten men following Giulio Maggiore’s dismissal after the Italian had opened the scoring for the hosts in that game.

The home form for Juventus is already going to prove an uphill task for an already struggling Salernitana side. Juventus have played 17 games at home this season, winning ten, drawing six and losing only once in that time.

The home side have won twice in their last five home games, drawing three and they boast a brilliant average of 2.12 points per game. Their overall record from 35 games this season is 18 wins, 12 draws and only five losses. Juventus are also unbeaten in their last five league games, although they have only won once and drawn the remaining four fixtures.

Juventus have an above-average win rate of 59% at home and they’ve only lost an impressive 6% when facing teams at the Allianz Stadium. Defensively is where their strong areas are at home this season. Juventus have kept clean sheets in 53% of their games at the Allianz Stadium this season and they’ve only conceded 0.59 goals per game on average.

Juventus are winless in their last four games in Serie A despite their league position, although they’ve kept three clean sheets in those five games played. The most recent home victory for the Old Lady was also their most recent home win against Fiorentina.

In a closely contested affair, Juventus won 1-0 thanks to a goal midway through the first half from Federico Gatti. In their most recent league game though, they were held to a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Olimpico against A.S. Roma

Depending on their result against Atalanta, the visitors will be chasing a first win since December when they beat Verona. Coincidentally, that was their most recent away win and victory was secured thanks to an early second-half goal from Loum Tchaouna.

As it stands, Salernitana have only won twice all season and once away from home against Verona. The relegated side have lost 12 games away from home and have averaged 0.41 points per game away from their home ground.

Their defensive woes have been evident all season, having conceded 2.15 goals per game played this season. On average they’ve conceded 2.29 goals per game on their travels and have only kept a clean sheet in 12% of their games.
