Roma vs Genoa: Preview & Prediction

Roma’s UEFA Champions League qualification chances could be hanging in the balance as they host Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico.

            Date: 19/05/2024

            Location: Stadio Olimpico

            Kick-Off: 7:45 PM

Daniele de Rossi’s side's slim hope of making the Champions League next year needs to be strengthened with nothing more than a victory over Genoa. The home side are currently fifth in the league and are three points behind fourth-placed Atalanta. The disadvantage for the home side is that Atalanta has a rescheduled game at the end of the season against Fiorentina.

Roma would need Atalanta to realistically drop points in two of their three remaining games this season with Atalanta also having a superior goal difference. Roma’s other route for Champions League qualification ended in mid-week thanks to yet another late comeback from Bayer Leverkusen.

Genoa have enjoyed a great season back in the top flight of Italian football. The newly promoted team from last season will once again be playing in Serie A as they look on course to record a mid-table finish. Genoa can still finish ahead of Torino in tenth, although they are four points behind with two games to play.

Genoa won the recent league meeting between the two sides 4-1 at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium.

Leandro Paredes, Gianluca Mancini, Romelu Lukaku, Sardar Azmoun and Dean Huijsen are suspension risks. Roma has no fresh injury concerns.

            Genoa Team News

Alan Matturro is out for an extended period. Mattia Bani, Albert Gudmundsson, Alessandro Voglicacco and Kevin Strootman are suspension risks.

            Recent Form

The recent history between the two teams would suggest that Roma will be the favourites heading into their game against Genoa. The home side has won four out of the last five league meetings between the two sides with Genoa winning the more recent one. Roma has also won five out of the last six competitive meetings between the two teams.

This fixture provides an average of 3.16 goals per game between the two teams. In the last 20 meetings between the two teams, Roma has the greater form having won 14, drawing four and losing only twice to their opponents.

Genoa have only won twice in the last decade against Roma with neither of those victories taking place at the Stadio Olimpico. The last game to take place between the two sides at Roma in the league was in 2022. The game finished honours even between the two sides with Leo Ostigard and Nicolo Zaniolo both receiving red cards for either side.

The most recent competitive meeting between the two sides at the Stadio Olimpico was in the Coppa Italia one year later. Roma were 1-0 winners thanks to a goal from Paulo Dybala. The last time either team achieved a league double over each other was in the 2020/21 season where Roma recorded a 3-0 league aggregate win over their opponents.

In the last ten league meetings between the two teams, there have only been two dismissals – which coincidentally was the most recent league meeting at the Stadio Olimpico in 2022.

Roma heads into this game with average form, having won two out of their last five league games. It’s worth mentioning that this is subject to change since Roma faces Atalanta before this game against Genoa takes place. Roma had drawn two of those five games and lost only once.

In their most recent home game, Roma drew 1-1 with Juventus after Bremer had cancelled out Romelu Lukaku’s opener for the home side. Roma’s last home victory in the league was against their local rivals Lazio. Gianluca Mancini guided Roma to victory in the derby fixture at the start of April.

Roma’s home form has been nothing short of exceptional this season. The home side has played 18 games at home this season as they approach their final home game of the season. Roma have won 11 out of the 18 games played, drawing four and losing only three times.

Roma have averaged 2.06 points per game this season at the Stadio Olimpico and have won three from their last five in the league this season. The home side has won 61% of their home games this season, whilst only losing 17%.

The hosts for this game have displayed a brilliant attacking record this season, having scored 2.06 goals per game over the 18 games played at the Stadio Olimpico. Daniele de Rossi’s side has a perfect record of scoring in every home game this season, whilst keeping a clean sheet record of 39% at home.

Paulo Dybala is our player to watch for this game. The Argentine international has 21 goal contributions for Roma this season in Serie A, whilst averaging a goal every 143 minutes of football. Dybala has two goal contributions in his last five games in all competitions.

Genoa’s away record this season, accompanied with their record away at the Stadio Olimpico doesn’t pose great reading for the visitors for this game. Genoa have played 18 games this season away from home and have won four, drawn seven and lost seven in general.

Genoa have averaged 1.06 points per game this season on their travels and have won 22% of their away fixtures this season. Defensively the issues have been there, with Genoa only recording a 17% clean sheet average this season away from home.

The away side has won only once in their last five away games, whilst drawing three and only losing once. Their most recent away victory was a 2-1 win over Hellas Verona thanks to goals from Albert Gudmundsson and Caleb Ekuban.

The Icelandic international Gudmundsson has been in terrific form for Genoa in their first season back in Serie A. The 26-year-old has 14 goals in the league this season with a goal contribution every 208 minutes.
