Sassuolo vs Inter Milan: Preview, Prediction & Betting Tips

Sassuolo are faced with a difficult task next weekend as they host the newly crowned champions Inter Milan. The visitors were declared champions with a win over their local rivals AC Milan.

            Location: Stadio Citta del Tricolore

            Date: 04/05/2024

            Kick-Off: 19:45 PM

The hosts have endured a terrible campaign thus far and the prospect of relegation is highly likely. Salernitana have already had their fate sealed with four games to go and now there are only two places to avoid for the rest of the season. Sassuolo will be desperate for any points gained here against an Inter Milan side brimming with confidence following their recent title win.

The home side are currently 19th in the league, as of writing. Sassuolo travel to Fiorentina before this game against Inter Milan, so they could find themselves a point ahead of Udinese. The hosts would have to beat Fiorentina and hope Bologna can beat Udinese. The team for both Udinese and Sassuolo to catch is Frosinone.

Frosinone is on 31 points after 34 games played, as mentioned Udinese and Sassuolo have yet to play their games in hand. Sassuolo are five points behind Frosinone and will move two points behind them before this fixture against Inter Milan.

The league champions, inter Milan, have unsurprisingly had a tremendous campaign. The Nerazzurri wrapped up their historic 20th league title with a 2-1 win over AC Milan and the visitors will undoubtedly receive their guard of honour in their home fixture against Torino – which takes place before this game.

Inter Milan can still mathematically reach over 100 points in Serie A this season, although they will finish below the overall points record by just one point if they win all their remaining games. The current record is 102 set by Juventus in 2013/14. The visitors, Inter Milan, are currently on 86 points and will only finish with a maximum of 101 points.

The champions could aim to secure a new club record. Inter Milan finished on 97 points in 2006/07 and they would need three wins from their remaining five games as it stands to beat their record.

In the previous league meeting between the two sides, interestingly it was Sassuolo who inflicted the only defeat against Inter Milan in the league this season. Inter Milan took the lead on the stroke of half-time thanks to Denzel Dumfries but goals from Nedim Bajrami and Domenico Berardi gave the visitors for that game a priceless win at the San Siro.

Domenico Berardi, Marcus Pedersen and Samu Castillejo are all ruled out with injuries. Armand Lauriente is currently serving a suspension but should be available for the game against Inter Milan. Gian Marco Ferrari and Ruan Tressoldi are suspension risks for this game.

Denzel Dumfries is suspended. However, the Dutch international will be back for this game. Henrikh Mkhitaryan is a suspension risk.

            Recent Form

The league champions have a marginal advantage heading into this game based on their recent head-to-head records. Inter Milan have won three out of their last five meetings between the two sides. The fixture at Sassuolo last season finished with a 2-1 win to Inter Milan, thanks to a brace from Edin Dzeko – who also scored in a friendly between the two sides that season.

The two teams have faced each other on 23 occasions, with Inter Milan being victorious 11 times, Sassuolo 10 times and drawing twice between the two sides. This game certainly provides plenty of goals, with an average of 3.09 goals scored in this fixture between the two sides.

The home side are currently on a four-match winless run at home in this fixture against Inter Milan. Sassuolo last tasted victory in this fixture at home back in 2018, where Domenico Berardi secured the win with a penalty in the 27th minute.

Inter Milan achieved the league double on Sassuolo last season, having also beaten their opposition 4-2 at the San Siro. A brace from Romelu Lukaku accompanied a strike from Lautaro Martinez and an own goal from Ruan to secure the victory for the Nerazzurri.

In three of the last ten games at Sassuolo between the two teams, there have been dismissals for either side. There hasn’t been a dismissal in this fixture played at Sassuolo in the last six encounters.

Unsurprisingly, the hosts don’t have a particularly great home record. In their last five games at home, Sassuolo have won only once, drawing twice and losing the remaining two games. The home side have averaged one point per game over 17 games played. Their record stands at 17 games played, winning four, drawing five and losing eight at home.

Sassuolo have won 18% of their games overall this season but a moderate 24% at home although still not impressive by any standards. Sassuolo have averaged 1.29 goals at home this season but defensively they have conceded 1.88 on average in league competitions.

A huge problem for the hosts is that they have been involved in high-scoring games this season. On average their games produce 3.18 goals scored between the two sides in any fixtures played.

Sassuolo’s last home game in which they gained a result was the recent 3-3 draw at home to AC Milan. Andrea Pinamonti and a brace from Armand Lauriente were cancelled out by a late equaliser from Noah Okafor.

Domenico Berardi leads the overall statistics in the attacking areas for the hosts. The Italian forward is the club’s second-highest scorer in the league with nine and is leading the way with 0.56 goals scored every 90 minutes.

Inter Milan have tremendous away form this season as they look to avenge their earlier league defeat against the only team to beat them in the league. The visitors have won their last five away games – averaging 2.75 points away from home in the league this season.

The league champions have played 16 games away from the San Siro this season, winning 14, and drawing twice. Inter Milan are unbeaten away from home in the league this season, with an 88%-win record on their travels.

Inter Milan have been excellent in front of goal away from home this season. The away side have averaged 2.38 goals away from home this season and they haven’t failed to score in any of the games they have played all season.

Lautaro Martinez averages 0.87 goals per 90 minutes and leads the way with 23 goals in Serie A. This is the Argentine’s most productive season in front of goal and has also scored 14 away from the San Siro from his 23 goals scored.
