Union Berlin vs Bayern Munich: Preview, Prediction & Betting Tips

Bayern make the trip to Alte Forsterei to take on Union Berlin this Saturday in the Bundesliga. The title has already gone to Bayer Leverkusen, so Bayern will just focus on keeping hold of second place, whereas Union Berlin need a win to keep themselves away from the relegation scrap.

              Date: 20/04/2024

              Kick off time: 17:30

              Location: Alte Forsterei

After 11 consecutive Bundesliga titles, Bayern find themselves out of the conversation and in a battle to secure a second place finish over Stuttgart. Union Berlin, however, need a win to make sure they stay out of the conversation of relegation.

Union Berlin currently sit 13th in the Bundesliga after 29 games. The Iron Ones have eight wins, five draws and 16 losses, leaving them on 29 points, just three points above the relegation zone.

The Iron Ones have struggled in front of goal this season. In 29 games, Union Berlin have scored just 25 goals, an average of 0.86 goals a game. However, Union Berlin have been much better defensively, conceding 45 goals and keeping six clean sheets.

Bayern Munich, on the other hand, currently sit second in the Bundesliga. In 29 games, Bayern have 20 wins, three draws and six losses which leaves them on 63 points, 16 points behind Bayer Leverkusen.

The Bavarians have the best scoring record in the Bundesliga, scoring 80 goals in 29 games which gives them an average of 2.86 goals a game. Bayern have struggled more than usual defensively this season, conceding 36 goals and keeping ten clean sheets.

Union Berlin and Bayern have met just ten times in their histories, with the first meeting coming back in 2009. Bayern dominate this fixture with seven wins and three draws. In fact, Union Berlin are yet to pick up a win in this fixture.

The last five games in this fixture have seen four wins for Bayern and one draw. This fixture usually promises goals, with three of the last five games having three or more goals.

              Recent Form

In their last five games in all competitions, Union Berlin have one win, one draw and three losses.

Serhou Guirassy opened the scoring for Stuttgart in the 19th minute to give them the 1 - 0 lead at halftime. However, following the red card to Union’s Andras Schafer, Chris Fuhrich scored to secure the 2 - 0 win for Stuttgart.

A quickfire double from Vertessen and Brenden Aaronson gave Union the 2 - 0 lead early in the second half. Though Mitchell Weiser did get Werder Bremen on the scoresheet just after the hour mark, Union held on for the 2 - 1 win.

The trip to Frankfurt saw Union only manage 35% of the possession and just two shots on target. However, Frankfurt also were unable to convert any of their four shots on target as the two sides played out a 0 - 0 draw.

A visit from top of the league Bayer Leverkusen saw Robin Gosens sent off for Union in the third minute of first half added time. Florian Wirtz then converted a penalty in the eighth minute of the first half added time to grab a 1 - 0 win for Leverkusen.

The last time out for Union was against Augsburg. Philip Tietz opened the scoring early in the second half and Sven Michel grabbed a goal in the 81st minute to give Augsburg the 2 - 0 win over Union.

In their last five games in all competitions, Bayern have two wins, one draw and two losses.

A goal from Tim Skarke gave Darmstadt the shock lead, but a goal from Jamal Musiala and Harry Kane gave Bayern the 2 - 1 lead at halftime. Another goal from Musiala and goals from Gnabry and Mathys Tel gave Bayern the 5 - 2 win - with Oscar Vilhelmsson grabbing a late goal from Darmstadt.

For the first time in ten years at the Allianz Arena, Bayern lost to Borussia Dortmund. Karim Adeyemi opened the scoring in the tenth minute and Julian Ryerson wrapped up the 2 - 0 win for Dortmund with his goal in the 83rd minute.

The pain would continue for Bayern with a shock loss to Heidenheim. Kane and Gnabry gave Bayern the 2 - 0 lead at halftime, but a goal from Kevin Sessa and a brace from Tim Kleindienst gave Heidenheim the 3 - 2 win.

The first leg of the Champions League Quarter Finals saw Bayern in London to take on Arsenal. Bukayo Saka gave Arsenal the lead in the 12th minute but a goal from Gnabry and a penalty from Kane gave Bayern the lead at halftime. However, a late goal from Leandro Trossard grabbed a 2 - 2 draw and forced the teams on level terms for the second leg.

Back in the Bundesliga, Bayern hosted Koln. After a goalless first half, Raphael Guerreiro and Thomas Muller both scored in the second half to give Bayern the 2 - 0 win.

Bayern also face Arsenal in the second leg of the Champions League Quarter Finals on Wednesday.
