Jermain Defoe on England strikers to challenge Harry Kane:

“Of course, Harry’s getting older, I still feel as though he has a lot of goals in him left. Obviously, you got Ollie Watkins who picked up during the Euros, Ivan Toney has gone to Saudi, then you’ve got Dominic Solanke who started quite slow at Tottenham but then picked up form.

I think you see with Ollie Watkins, he made an impact during the Euros and came on scored, so I like to think those two players (Watkins and Solanke) can make an impact”

...on how Thomas Tuchel will fare as England manager:

You talk about obviously what he did in the Premier League and also what he did with Bayern Munich and Harry (Kane) was there with him, and he speaks very highly of the manager because of, you know his detail and his coaching, you know what you get from him as a player.

You see how good he is at cup competitions because, hopefully, he is the one to get us over the line, because obviously you speak about Gareth (Southgate) and Steve Holland and the job they did, getting us far and so close but not getting over the line.

If you look at the managers available, he (Tuchel) was probably the best one out there, so we look forward to what he does”

...on strikers' value in the market (compared to himself):

I think goalscorers are hard to come by. If you look at the numbers at the minute, Dom Solanke came in for big money at Spurs.

So you’re probably looking at £100m, not just saying me, but any striker - particularly English striker - who was scoring goals regularly”

...on which strikers could make a step up in the summer:

“Isak, probably. He’s the main one you will be looking at, and he got linked with Arsenal and with Liverpool recently.

Yeah, I think he’s the one that excites me,I always fancy him to score and he consistently does it, and he’s a handful. You see the way he played against Arsenal recently, against Gabriel and Saliba, the nightmare he gave those two, and you have even seen Haaland struggle.

I think if a move to Liverpool happens, it will be amazing for him.”

...on fan disgruntlement at Manchester United and Tottenham (comparing to his own experiences)

I experienced lots of things off the pitch, but I think as players, it’s important to focus on the job at hand, winning football matches, focusing on what you’re good at.

You are not in control of the other stuff, so there is no point focusing on the other stuff too much because it’s hard enough as it is getting distracted and using things as an excuse, so it’s important to focus on your game and why you should be in the team.

I know around Manchester United and Tottenham, there is a lot of noise around the club, but as players, you can’t get involved in that.”

...on Mikey Moore

Mikey Moore is amazing, an amazing young talent. So I had two years with him in the academy, and when I got there, they told me there was this next big talent that I needed to work with.

I was happy when he came on and scored in Europe, so I am happy for him. He’s 17, still young, and I don’t think people have seen the best in Mikey Moore yet.

Mikey just needs to keep improving on his game, focus, and embrace it. Embrace training. Embrace the players around you.”

...on Will Lankshear:

He’s good you know, he’s like a throwback number 9. Lankshear puts himself about, he scored so many goals in the under 21’s.

He is one of those strikers that celebrates goals in training, he’s got a good appetite for goals, he’s on loan at the minute, but I like to think he could break into the first team (Tottenham) and score many goals”

...on Rangers:

Rangers is an amazing football club, I think everyone knows Rangers is a massive club. There’s lot of expectations to win, you know if you come second you come last in that respect."
