Matchday two of the Africa Cup of Nations sees Senegal take on Cameroon in what will most likely be a crucial game in deciding the group winner. Gambia and Guinea are the two other sides in Group C.
Senegal enter the game as favourites, and are also amongst the top teams favoured to win the entire competition. Cameroon are the second most successful nation in AFCON history, their five titles only bettered by Egypt’s seven. Their last victory came in 2017.
Their opponents, in comparison, have won the competition just once in history, but that came as recently as 2022, when they beat Egypt on penalties.
Cameroon are managed by former Liverpool and West Ham player Rigobert Song, and he will be relying on a lot of unknown talent for this tournament. There are some notable names in there, such as Man United goalkeeper Andre Onana, former Fulham and current Napoli midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Besiktas striker Vincent Aboubakar.
Aliou Cisse has six Premier League players to choose from in his Senegal squad, including Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson, Tottenham’s Pape Matar Sarr and Everton’s Idrissa Gueye. Of course, former Liverpool star Sadio Mane is the main man and will be hoping to lead his country to back-to-back titles.
The Indomitable Lions will be hoping to go a step further than they did last time, as they fell at the semi-final to eventual runners-up Egypt on penalties.
Senegal and Cameroon have met 14 times, with the most recent coming last October in an international friendly. Senegal came out on top 1-0 thanks to a Sadio Mane penalty. There has not been much to split the two sides, with Senegal winning six and Cameroon victorious in five.
