Matchday two of the Africa Cup of Nations sees Senegal take on Cameroon in what will most likely be a crucial game in deciding the group winner. Gambia and Guinea are the two other sides in Group C.

Senegal enter the game as favourites, and are also amongst the top teams favoured to win the entire competition. Cameroon are the second most successful nation in AFCON history, their five titles only bettered by Egypt’s seven. Their last victory came in 2017.

Their opponents, in comparison, have won the competition just once in history, but that came as recently as 2022, when they beat Egypt on penalties.

Cameroon are managed by former Liverpool and West Ham player Rigobert Song, and he will be relying on a lot of unknown talent for this tournament. There are some notable names in there, such as Man United goalkeeper Andre Onana, former Fulham and current Napoli midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Besiktas striker Vincent Aboubakar.

Aliou Cisse has six Premier League players to choose from in his Senegal squad, including Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson, Tottenham’s Pape Matar Sarr and Everton’s Idrissa Gueye. Of course, former Liverpool star Sadio Mane is the main man and will be hoping to lead his country to back-to-back titles.

The Indomitable Lions will be hoping to go a step further than they did last time, as they fell at the semi-final to eventual runners-up Egypt on penalties.

Senegal and Cameroon have met 14 times, with the most recent coming last October in an international friendly. Senegal came out on top 1-0 thanks to a Sadio Mane penalty. There has not been much to split the two sides, with Senegal winning six and Cameroon victorious in five.

Senegal vs Cameroon Team News

Senegal Team News

Senegal have included Salernitana striker Boulaye Dia in their squad despite his recent injury woes. Just over a week ago, he limped off in the second half of his club’s clash with AC Milan and looked set to miss the tournament. However, Aliou Cisse named him in the squad and he is confident the forward will be able to play in the opening games.

Defender Youssouf Sabaly was also named in the squad, though he has not played a single game since August. He had returned to full training with Real Betis and will hope to play a part.

Cameroon Team News

Captain Vincent Aboubakar suffered a thigh injury in training last Friday, though the setback is not serious enough to rule him out of the tournament. The striker underwent scans which determined it a minor injury. Whilst it remains to be seen how much time he misses, if any, he will most likely still be able to play a crucial part in Cameroon’s campaign.

It will be interesting to see if Manchester United's Andre Onana starts this match, having been left out of the Indomitable Lions opener with Guinea following delays to his flight to the Ivory Coast after his swift departure after taking part in the Red Devils 2-2 home draw with Tottenham Hotspur. The 27-year-old was reportedly furious at Rigobert Song's decision to omit him from the matchday squad.

Form Guide

Senegal

In their last five games, Senegal have won four and drawn one. The most recent result saw them beat Gambia 3-0 in their first game of the Africa Cup of Nations. Pape Gueye opened the scoring, before Lamine Camara added a brace. Prior to the tournament, they were in a good stretch of form, with a 1-0 victory over Niger serving as a warm-up. Formose Mendy scored the winner in the ninth minute of second-half stoppage time.

They picked up a point as they drew 0-0 in their second game of World Cup qualification away to Togo. It helped them maintain top spot in the group following their 4-0 rout of South Sudan in the opener. An international friendly against this week’s opponents ended in victory as Sadio Mane converted from the spot.

Cameroon

In their last five games, Cameroon have won one, lost one and drawn three. They opened up their AFCON campaign with a 1-1 draw with Guinea. They could not find a winning goal, despite playing 45 minutes against ten men. Mohamed Bayo scored after ten minutes to put Guinea in front, before Frank Magri netted early in the second half to earn Cameroon a point.

Their sole defeat came against this week’s opposition in an international friendly, so Rigobert Song’s men will be hoping for a different result in this crucial matchup. They followed up that friendly defeat with a 3-0 win over Mauritius in their first game of World Cup qualifying. Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, Georges-Kevin Nkoudou and Magri found the back of the net.

Prior to the tournament, they picked up two 1-1 draws against Libya and Zambia, the former a World Cup qualifier.
