Germany vs Netherlands: Preview & Prediction

Netherlands travel to Germany for matchday four of the Nations League, with both teams battling at the top of the group.

Date: 14/10/24

Kick-off time: 19:45

Venue: Allianz Arena

Germany currently hold top spot in League A Group 3 following their win in the last game against Bosnia. It moves them two points clear of their upcoming opponent with an opportunity to create some distance between them with a victory. They have yet to be beaten in the competition, scoring nine goals and conceding just three.

Just behind them is the Netherlands, who are also unbeaten in their opening three games. However, a draw last time out at Hungary has seen them fall behind the group leaders. They have won one game and that came against Bosnia on matchday one. A victory would see them claim first place from Germany, but a defeat would significantly reduce their chances of catching their opponents.

The pair have already faced off in the tournament, with the game ending 2-2. Netherlands have been vulnerable at the back of late, a weakness that can be exploited by the Germans. In the three Nations League games, they have yet to keep a clean sheet. The last time they recorded a shutout was in the Round of 16 of the Euros against Romania. Germany, on the other hand, have been potent in front of goal. They have scored at least twice in four of their last five games in all competitions.

Julian Nagelsmann will be without Kai Havertz, who has started excellently for Arsenal this season. Striker Tim Kleindienst could start in his place, having done so in the previous game. The Borussia Monchengladbach player has scored three times in six Bundesliga games so far. Denis Undav played just behind and scored a brace against Bosnia, and will look to threaten once more against Netherlands.

Hoping to do damage against the German backline is a Dutch attack which contains two Premier League forwards in Cody Gakpo and Joshua Zirkzee. The duo have struggled for their clubs with just one league goal between them, but will be desperate for better success on the international stage. Netherlands as a team have scored seven times in the last three, so will aim to continue this momentum.

Where to Watch

Germany vs Netherlands will not be available to watch on TV in the UK.

Virgil van Dijk will miss out through suspension after receiving a red card in the last game. Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber was not called up, though his brother Quinten is involved. Premier League involvement includes Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch, Ian Maatsen and Matthijs de Ligt.

Form Guide

Germany:

In their last five games, Germany have won three, drawn one and lost one. It has been a solid stretch for Germany as they are still unbeaten in the Nations League. However, the first game of this run dates back to the European Championships. In the Round of 16, they were 2-0 winners against Denmark with second half goals from Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala.

Their Euros journey came to an end in the quarter-final of the tournament as Spain beat them 2-1 after extra-time. An 89th minute equaliser from Florian Wirtz forced another 30 minutes, but a Mikel Merino strike right at the death broke German hearts. They returned to action in September with a convincing 5-0 win over Hungary. Niclas Fullkrug, Musiala, Wirtz, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Havertz were all on the scoresheet.

The second game of their Nations League campaign was a 2-2 draw at Netherlands. Tijjani Reijnders opened the scoring two minutes in, but Germany turned it around before the break through Deniz Undav and Joshua Kimmich. Denzel Dumfries equalised shortly after the restart. Their most recent fixture was a trip to face Bosnia. They were 2-1 winners, with a brace from Undav helping them on their way to victory.

Netherlands:

In their last five games, Netherlands have won two, drawn two and lost one. There have plenty of goals for the Netherlands in this recent stretch. The first game dates back to the European Championships in which they were 2-1 winners in the quarter-final against Turkey. Samer Akaydin scored the opener for their opponents, but a Stefan de Vrij strike and own goal turned it around late on.

Their tournament came to an end in the semi-final in a 2-1 defeat to England. This time they went ahead early through Xavi Simons, but Harry Kane levelled from the spot shortly after. With the tie headed for extra-time, substitute Ollie Watkins netted in the 90th minute to send England through.

A return to Nations League action saw them beat Bosnia 5-2 at home. Joshua Zirkzee, Reijnders, Cody Gakpo, Wout Weghorst and Simons were all on the scoresheet. They followed this with a 2-2 draw with their upcoming opponents Germany. Their most recent game was a trip to Hungary, where they drew 1-1. Roland Sallai gave the hosts the lead, before Denzel Dumfries equalised late on. Virgil van Dijk had earlier been sent off.
