The Estadio Nuevo Vivero hosts Spain and Andorra in an international friendly this Wednesday. Spain are deep in preparation for this summer’s European Championships whereas Andorra look to pick up their first win in the fixture.
Date: 05/06/2024
Kick off time: 20:30
Location: Estadio Nuevo Vivero
It’ll be a quiet summer for Andorra after failing to qualify for the Euros, meaning a big win over Spain this week could mean even more. Spain, on the other hand, will be looking to build some momentum going into a summer of tournament football.
Spain finished top of their qualifying group for the Euros. Group A saw them take on Scotland, Norway, Georgia and Cyprus and in eight games, Spain picked up seven wins and one loss. This left them on 21 points, four points above second-place Scotland.
At the tournament Spain will compete in Group B alongside the likes of Croatia, reigning Champions Italy and Albania. Spain have a good record in this competition as two time champions, Spain are the only side to ever win consecutive titles with their wins in 2008 and 2012.
Andorra had a poor showing in qualifying for the Euros. In Group I, Andorra took on Kosovo, Belarus, Israel, Switzerland and Romania. In ten games, Andorra picked up two draws and eight losses, leaving them on two points, bottom of the group and 15 points from qualification.
The Euros are a tournament that Andorra have never competed in. In fact, the best result Andorra have ever recorded in relation is a fifth place finish in their qualification group, which they recorded in 20004, 2020 and 2024.
Spain and Andorra have met just once in their histories, with this coming back in an international friendly in 2004. Here Spain washed out Andorra, grabbing the only win in the fixture.
Fernando Sanchez Morientes opened the scoring for Spain in the 25th minute and Ruben Baraja doubled the lead before halftime. Both Martin Cesar and Juan Carlos Valeron also scored in the second half to give Spain the 4 - 0 win.
