Liverpool vs West Ham United Prediction

For this League Cup fixture between two Premier League sides, we expect the current holders, Liverpool, to make quick work of West Ham United and progress into the fourth round.

Liverpool have an excellent record against West Ham United, with no losses in their last six. The visiting side has not kept a clean sheet in their last 18 against Liverpool, and no clean sheets in their previous three in general.

West Ham United are winless in their last three, and the Hammers only have one win this season in the Premier League. Liverpool's home record places them in a strong position for this game, as the Reds have only lost twice in their last ten at Anfield. Expect goals in this fixture between the two sides, as Over 2.5 goals have been scored in eight of the last meetings between the two teams.

Cup upsets do happen from time to time, however, with West Ham United’s start to the season, facing a Liverpool side with four wins in their first five under Arne Slot in the league, nothing less than a victory for the Reds should happen here.

        Liverpool 3-1 West Ham United.

Liverpool vs West Ham United Preview & Prediction

The Carabao Cup (League Cup) presents the first opportunity for clubs in England to win a domestic trophy this season. The current holders, Liverpool begin their defence of the trophy at Anfield, as they host a West Ham United side struggling for consistency at this stage of the season.

        Date: 25/09/2024
        Location: Anfield
        Kick-Off: 8 pm

Liverpool has had a storied history in this competition since its formation in 1960. Liverpool are the current holders of the competition, following a wonderful victory over Chelsea in the final in February. The Carabao Cup (League Cup) marked the final trophy of the Juergen Klopp era and his third final victory over Chelsea. Liverpool’s win provided a beautiful narrative of how vital youth football is in this country by fielding no less than five youth academy graduates in a 1-0 extra-time win.

Now, under the guidance of tactically astute Arne Slot, Liverpool have made an impressive start to the season, only losing once in their opening six in all competitions. The Reds began their season with three consecutive victories against Ipswich Town, Brentford and, more notably, Manchester United. Arne Slot’s side suffered a shock defeat to Nottingham Forest. However, they recovered with consecutive victories over AC Milan in the Champions League.

West Ham United are also under new management this season following the departure of David Moyes. Since his arrival, Julen Lopetegui has seen his West Ham United produce indifferent results whilst trying to incorporate a new crop of talent arriving at the London Stadium. The Hammers began their season with a 2-1 opening-day defeat to Aston Villa. West Ham United recovered the week after to record a London derby victory over Crystal Palace. The visitors overcame Bournemouth in the previous round of this competition and since have gone winless against Manchester City and Fulham, respectively.

The two teams previously met in this competition last season, with Liverpool running out with a comprehensive 5-1 win at Anfield.

        Form Guide

As mentioned previously, the recent meetings between the two teams heavily favour the team in Merseyside. Liverpool have an excellent record against West Ham United, with no losses in their last six. The visiting side has not kept a clean sheet in their last 18 against Liverpool, and no clean sheets in their previous three in general. The last meeting between the two teams ended in a 2-2 draw at the London Stadium, with both meetings at Anfield resulting in the home side scoring at least three past the Hammers on each occasion.

Liverpool has a terrific home record with two losses in ten, one against a London-based side in Crystal Palace. Despite the loss of Klopp, Liverpool’s attacking impetus has still remained, with ten goals scored and two goals scored every game. Defensively, Liverpool boasts one of the more impressive defensive records in the Premier League with only one goal conceded in five. Their previous fixture saw the Reds return to winning ways at Anfield with a 3-0 win over Bournemouth thanks to a brace from Luis Diaz, who took his tally to five for the season.

West Ham United’s record away form is relatively poor, with the Hammers only winning once in their last five away competitive fixtures. The visitors' previous away win was the win over London rivals Crystal Palace, and their last away victory was at Wolverhampton Wanderers in April. Defensively, West Ham United will need to improve as they are without a clean sheet in their last three.

This season, Lopetegui’s side only have one win from five in the Premier League, suffering defeats to Chelsea, Aston Villa and Manchester City. The performance against Chelsea, particularly, raised concerns about how Lopetegui organised the team. The Hammers have conceded nine goals this season, conceding 1.8 goals per game.
