Next Hartlepool United Manager Odds

Hartlepool are on the search for a new manager following the dismissal of John Askey after a run of just three wins in 19 matches.

The Victoria Park club currently sit 17th in the National League having suffered relegation from League Two last season under the 59-year-old’s management, although this was mainly down to poor form under Paul Hartley and Keith Curle before Askey’s appointment.

Following Hartlepool’s 2-0 defeat at Oldham Athletic, Askey’s final record at Hartlepool stands at 12 wins and 11 draws in 41 matches in charge of Pools.

Paul Hurst Odds: 4/1

Former Grimsby manager Paul Hurst is the current favourite for the job at Hartlepool having been without a job since leaving Blundell Park on 8th October.

Hurst made a name for himself with the Mariners back in 2015/16 as he guided them to promotion, before leaving the club and taking Shrewsbury Town to the League One play-off final against all odds, as well as the EFL Trophy final.

Following this though, Hurst’s career took a turn for the worse, as he left the Shrews to manage Ipswich, where he won just one of 15 games in charge. After this, Hurst then managed Scunthorpe between May 2019 and January 2020 and was dismissed from his role due to a breakdown in his relationship with the club’s chairman.

The 49-year-old’s most recent managerial achievement was winning the National League play-offs with Grimsby in 2021/22.

Antony Sweeney Odds: 6/1

Hartlepool legend Antony Sweeney is also in the running for the job, having served the club as a player, Interim Manager and Caretaker Manager.

Sweeney has taken charge of Hartlepool 15 times in his coaching career, winning six and drawing two and will hope that he is considered for the job on a permanent basis having made a total of 444 league appearances for the club.

The 40-year-old is in the process of helping to redevelop the club's youth academy and currently holds a UEFA A Licence qualification.

Darren Sarll Odds: 8/1

Former Stevenage, Yeovil and Woking manager Darren Sarll is also rumoured to be in contention for the managerial vacancy at Victoria Park.

Sarll was highly thought of while being manager of Stevenage, having narrowly missed out on the play-offs in the 2016/17 season after helping the club to avoid relegation in the previous campaign.

On top of this, the 40-year-old also took charge of Yeovil for 134 matches, however, he failed to gain promotion during his three-year spell at Huish Park, opting to leave the club in March 2022 in order to join Woking.

At Woking, Sarll won 35 of his 80 matches in charge between March 2022 and November 2023 where he memorably led the club to the National League play-offs last season. However, this campaign he was sacked following a poor run of results that included being dumped out of the FA Cup by Ramsgate.

Matt Grey Odds: 10/1

Matt Grey is another highly regarded manager to feature on this list, following his dismissal from Sutton United in late December.

The 42-year-old oversaw 226 matches in charge of The Us between May 2019 and December 2023 and managed to win the National League in the 2020/21 season while finishing as EFL Trophy runners-up in 2021/22.

Unfortunately for Grey, Sutton had a poor start to the current campaign, seeing him relieved of his duties after the club suffered a humiliating 8-0 loss to Stockport County. During his first two seasons as a League Two manager, Grey had managed United to 8th and 14th place finishes.

Lee Cattermole Odds: 10/1

Ex-Sunderland and Middlesbrough midfielder Lee Cattermole could be the latest big name from the North East to chance his arm at management with Hartlepool.

The 35-year-old retired from playing back in 2019/20 having most recently plied his trade at VVV-Venlo, however, since then, Cattermole has managed Middlesbrough’s Under 18s side, while being an Interim assistant manager of the club between 4th October 2022 and 24th October of the same year.

Cattermole currently holds a UEFA A License coaching badge so would be eligible to manage Hartlepool.
