With Pep Guardiola’s contract expiring at the end of the 2024/25 season and his future looking uncertain at the Etihad Stadium, we have taken a look at candidates to become Manchester City’s next manager.

Interestingly some key figures have announced that they will be departing the champions of late, with Guardiola’s close friend Txiki Begiristain set to be replaced by Hugo Viana at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

Guardiola has been at City since the start of the 2016/17 campaign, winning 18 major honours while managing 483 matches with a staggering 72.46% win percentage. Notable achievements include becoming the first team in English football history in 2017/18, winning all four domestic titles in 2018/19, as well as winning the treble in 2022/23 on top of becoming the first-ever side to win the English top-flight four times in a row in 2023/24.

Girona manager Michel is thought to be held in high regard by City Football Group having done a superb job at the La Liga outfit.

Last season, Michel oversaw Girona’s shock Champions League qualification as they finished third in La Liga with 81 points while developing talents such as Artem Dovbyk and Savinho who now ply their trades at AS Roma and Manchester City.

With Girona being a group that are owned by City Football Group, this move would be an easy transition for Michel should he be offered the job at the Etihad Stadium.

Could Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso make a return to English football with City?

The Spaniard is one of the most sought after managers in Europe following Bayer Leverkusen’s sensational 2023/24 season where they won the German Bundesliga for the first-ever time while also remaining undefeated. Alonso also managed to win the DFB Pokal last campaign and saw his side finish as runners-up to Atalanta in the Europa League final.

So far this season, Leverkusen have managed to win the DFL-Supercup at the expense of Stuttgart, while in the league, they sit sixth with 11 points from six matches, just three points of Bayern Munich at the top of the table.

Sporting Lisbon coach Ruben Amorim is a name that tends to be linked to a lot of high-profile managerial roles due to his impressive achievements at José Alvalade Stadium. However, with Sporting’s Director of Football set to join City, could Amorim also make his way to the blue side of Manchester?

During his time at Sporting, Amorim has achieved five trophies, memorably winning the club’s first Primeira Liga title in 19 years in the 2020/21 season before winning it again in 2023/24 while also winning the Supertaca Candido de Oliveira in 2021 on top of two Taca de Ligas in just over four years as manager of the club.

Between December 2019 and March 2020, Amorim managed Sporting Braga and managed to win the Taca da Liga before departing to Sporting.

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany will likely be in consideration for the job at City due to the Belgian being regarded as a club legend.

The 38-year-old played for City between 2008 and 2019, making a total of 265 league appearances while also being club captain. During his time at the Etihad Stadium, Kompany won 12 major honours.

Kompany started his managerial career off with Anderlecht in July 2019 and was with his former club until June 2022 and failed to win any major honours there, as his side finished as Belgian Cup runner-up in 2021/22.

Prior to his role at Bayern, Kompany was most recently manager of Burnley, where he managed to win the Championship in 2022/23, before seeing his side relegated with just 24 points from 38 matches.

Could Luis Enrique replace Pep Guardiola for a second time in his career having done so at Barcelona in 2014?

Enrique currently manages PSG having had a three-year spell in charge of Spain and managed to win Ligue 1, the Coupe de France and Trophee des Champions in his first season in charge.

The 54-year-old had a short but trophy-laden three-year spell in charge of Barcelona from 2014 to 2017, as he famously won the treble in his first season in charge and even added another six trophies to the Catalan club’s cabinet.

Roberto De Zerbi is also on the shortlist of managers that could take over from Guardiola at City.

The 45-year-old moved to Marseille in the summer and has had a promising start to life in the south of France, having accumulated 14 points from seven league matches.

In 89 games with Brighton, the Italian won 38, drawn 22 and lost 29, giving him an impressive 42.7% win rate. Joining in September 2022, he led them to a sixth-place finish and a spot in the Europa League, securing European football for the first time in the club’s history. They finished the 2023/24 season in 11th-place.

Before joining Brighton, the Italian had notably been manager of the likes of Shakhtar Donetsk and Sassuolo. During his time in charge of Shakhtar, De Zerbi’s side were top of the table but, he left due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, while at Sassuolo, he oversaw 120 matches between July 2018 and May 2021 and achieved two eight-placed finishes.
