Next Manchester United Manager Odds

Manchester United are on the lookout for a new manager following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, after reported tensions between the former Sporting Lisbon manager and the hierarchy at Old Trafford had reached their boiling point.

Ruben Amorim leaves the Red Devils in sixth place in the Premier League; however, persistent calls and criticism over his reluctance to move away from his preferred system have hindered the home side's progress. Despite their league position improving on paper this season, the Red Devils have squandered opportunities to capitalise, and performances against Wolves, West Ham, and Everton at Old Trafford have brought the future of Amorim into question.

With Darren Fletcher now placed in temporary charge, we look at the permanent candidates in line for the managerial hotseat at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solksjaer - 9/4

This feels like a Deja Vu moment at Old Trafford, as former caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solksjaer has been linked with a sensational return, just over four years after his dismissal as the club's permanent manager.

When the former player-turned-coach of the club rocked up at Old Trafford in December 2018, following the dismissal of Jose Mourinho, few would have expected the impact he would have during his interim spell. Ole Gunnar Solksjaer won his first eight matches in temporary charge, 10 of his first 11 and 14 out of 19 in all before being appointed permanently in March 2019. Many memorable moments during his interim spell included that monumental comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

During his permanent spell as manager until November 2021, the club recorded two consecutive top-four finishes (the only time this has been achieved since Sir Alex Ferguson retired) and reached a European final, which they lost to Villarreal. His tenure at the club ended dismally with many fans and pundits heavily criticising Ole after the 4-1 defeat at Vicarage Road in the 2021/22 season.

Ole Gunnar Solksjaer - 9/4

Darren Fletcher - 13/2

Darren Fletcher will take charge of Manchester United's latest fixture against Burnley, as confirmed by the club. Fletcher, just as the previous candidate on the list, is a club man, having spent the majority of his career at Old Trafford.

The 41-year-old came back to the club in October 2020, Fletcher returned to Manchester United to coach the Under-16s, and in January 2021, he was promoted to first-team coach. In March 2021, he became the technical director at Manchester United. He was replaced in this role by Jason Wilcox in April 2024.

Fletcher's current permanent role at the club is as head coach of the Manchester United Under-18s.

Oliver Glasner - 9/4

The first manager outside Manchester United's club ethos is Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner. Journalists such as Fabrizio Romano and others have reported that the Austrian will not be renewing his contract at Selhurst Park, with the manager looking to showcase his abilities elsewhere.

The issue for Glasner and Manchester United early doors will be the use of the formation/system. Ruben Amorim was heavily criticised during his time at Old Trafford for his reluctance to adopt a four-person backline, and with Glasner, parallels exist with the Portuguese manager. Glasner's preference at Crystal Palace is to play with a three-back formation; however, Glasner has often spoken about the need to change the dynamic of the team, which is a personnel issue rather than a stubbornness/preference.

Glasner's time at Crystal Palace has been the most successful in the club's history, guiding them to an FA Cup victory and a Community Shield, as well as obtaining European Football.

Oliver Glasner - 9/4

Gareth Southgate - 7/1

Gareth Southgate is a name that is frequently mentioned in relation to the job at United due to his good relationship with INEOS.

Major journalists such as David Ornstein of The Athletic have recently stated that the former England manager was not a contender for the job in the summer and that there is no new information to suggest that he would be now.

The 54-year-old initially overachieved when becoming England manager in 2016, as he lead the Three Lions to their first semi-final in a major tournament since 1996 when they finished fourth-place in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, however, his tenure is often looked down upon following England’s failure to win either of the Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 finals.

Gareth Southgate - 7/1

Sebastian Hoeneß - 16/1

Outside the Premier League, a prominent name making waves in the managerial game is VfB Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeneß. The former Hoffenheim manager took charge of the club in 2023 and steered Stuttgart away from relegation, eventually winning the playoffs against Hamburg.

The following season saw a remarkable upturn in fortunes, as VfB Stuttgart recorded their highest league finish since 2007 and secured Champions League football for the first time since 2010. During his first year in charge, only Leverkusen (100) and Bayern Munich (88) obtained more points than Stuttgart (86), averaging 2.1 points per game. In the transfer market, his signings have been a masterclass in recruitment, bringing the deep-lying playmaker talents of Angelo Stiller to the club from Hoffenheim and Serhou Guirassy, who eventually left for Borussia Dortmund.

Sebastian Hoeneß won the DFB Pokal last season and his contract runs out in 2028.

Now, if the reports are to be believed, then Ole Gunnar Solksjaer is set for a return, possibly, but only in an interim capacity. Solksjaer is likely to be at the club until the summer, when the new manager will be announced.

The easy choice would be Oliver Glasner. The Crystal Palace man is not renewing his deal at the club, and with his impressive work at the Eagles, INEOS will see this as a cost-effective option.

However, the key in their hiring policy will be the voice of the former RB Leipzig director Christian Vivell. The former Chelsea technical director has also been heavily involved in the recruitment process at Old Trafford, most notably signing Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig.

This makes you question whether Vivell is considering Sebastian Hoeneß as an option for the club and can't be ruled out at 16/1.

Our choice is Ole Gunnar Solksjaer on an interim basis, but the next permanent manager could well be Oliver Glasner, considering his contractual situation.

Oliver Glasner - 9/4
