Southampton are on the lookout for a new manager following the sacking of Nathan Jones in the aftermath of their 2-1 home loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Jones was never particularly a popular choice at St Mary’s, with many questioning his CV prior to his appointment, while his abrasive remarks in press conferences made his position virtually untenable.

The Welshman’s record at the club stands at five wins and nine losses from 14 matches, with four of his five victories being in cup matches. Here, we take a look at candidates to take the vacancy at St Mary’s.

Jesse Marsch Odds: 1/4

Jesse Marsch has emerged as a shock favourite having been sacked as Leeds United manager last week.

The 49-year-old American oversaw 37 matches at Elland Road, winning 11 and drawing ten, equating to a 29.73% win percentage. During his time at Leeds, Marsch took over from a popular figure in Marcelo Bielsa and guided the club to Premier League safety thanks to a final day win away at Brentford from what was a precarious position.

Marsch’s most successful time as a manager came at RB Salzburg when he guided them to back-to-back Austrian Bundesliga titles and Austrian Cups in 2019/20 and 2020/21. It would certainly be interesting to see if he can turn the Saints' fortunes around.

Southampton are priced at 1/4 to appoint Marsch as their next manager - click on the link to claim this bet in your bet slip!

Steven Gerrard Odds: 7/1

Steven Gerrard has also been linked with what would be his second Premier League managerial job following his dismissal from Aston Villa in late October.

Gerrard’s time at Villa finished badly, as the Villains won just two of their last 12 league fixtures under the Liverpool legends management, seeing him have a 32.5% win percentage following 13 wins and eight draws in 40 matches.

The 42-year-old will be keen to have another shot in the Premier League, especially after doing so well at Rangers, having won the Scottish Premiership at a canter, earning 102 points in the 2020/21 season, while conceding just 13 goals.

Gerrard is priced at 7/1 to be Southampton’s next manager.

Marcelo Gallardo Odds: 14/1

Former River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo is another managerial name that has been touted for the job, despite being yet to prove himself on the European stage. However, could the Saints be the ones to try Gallardo, having given the likes of Pochettino and Pellegrino chances in the Premier League?

Gallardo has had a successful managerial career back in his homeland of Argentina with River Plate, who he played for during his playing days.

The 46-year-old’s managerial career actually started at Nacional in Uruguay where he won the Primera Division in his first and only season in charge.

Gallardo’s next job would be at River Plate, where he would go down in the club’s history as an iconic figure, having won the Copa Sudamericana in his first year, before winning the Copa Libertadores in 2015 and 2018 on top of the 11 other major trophies.

Southampton are priced at 14/1 to appoint Gallardo as Hasenhuttl’s successor.

Mauricio Pochettino Odds: 10/1

Mauricio Pochettino is priced at 10/1 to make a sensational return to Southampton.

The 50-year-old was most recently manager of PSG and has missed out on a series of big jobs since his exit from the Parc des Princes.

Pochettino managed Southampton between January 2013 and May 2014, taking over from Nigel Adkins, laying the foundations for the Saints to challenge for Europe on a regular basis, having developed the likes of Adam Lallana, Jay Rodriguez, Jose Fonte, Toby Alderweireld, Morgan Schneiderlin and more.

Since his time at St Mary’s Pochettino went on to manage Tottenham, where he elevated them from Europa League fodder to a side that regularly competed for Champions League football - notably reaching the Champions League final in 2019.

Following his time at Spurs, Pochettino returned to former club PSG, where he managed to win three trophies in two years, but, this and his lack of success in the Champions League saw patience wear thin between himself and the PSG hierarchy, resulting in his departure last summer.

Pochettino is priced at 10/1 to make a shock return to St Mary’s as Southampton’s next manager.

Kjetil Knutsen Odds: 33/1

Bodo/Glimt manager Kjetil Knutsen is also on this list of managers who has been linked to the vacancy at Southampton.

Down the years, Southampton have been known for making smart and innovative decisions when it comes to recruitment, perhaps Knutsen could be the latest manager to join the St Mary’s Club.

Knutsen’s name came to stardom when his side Bodo/Glit side thrashed AS Roma 6-1 in the Europa Conference league last season, before defeating the Serie A outfit 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico. The 53-year-old has won Eliteserien manager of the year in each of the last three seasons and led his side to a league title in 2020 and 2021.

This could potentially be a smart move by Southampton due to the success that the Norwegian has found when developing players both in his homeland and in European competitions.

Could Knutsen become the eighth Norwegian to join the Saints, after the likes of Claus Lunkdevam, Stig Johansen and Mohamed Elyounoussi?

Knutsen is priced at 33/1 to follow Johansen’s footsteps in joining Southampton from Bodo/Glimt.
