Erling Haaland comes in as the bookie's favourites to finish as the Champions League top scorer at 5/1 having done so with 10 goals to his name last season, despite Borussia Dortmund’s quarter-final exit to eventual runners-up Manchester City.

The Norwegian has started this season in an impressive manner once again having managed to score five and assist four in four Bundesliga matches so far this season and with Dortmund being drawn to play Ajax, Besiktas and Sporting Lisbon in Group C, there is every chance that he could be close to last season’s tally by the end of the group stage if the Norwegian carries on his current goal rate.

Robert Lewandowski comes in as the bookie’s joint-favourite to Haaland for this season’s Champions League top scorer with the odds of 5/1.

The 33-year-old has started this season in emphatic fashion, scoring six goals in four Bundesliga matches for Bayern, to add to the record-breaking 41 he managed in 29 league appearances last season. The Polish striker was the Champions League’s top scorer in the 2019/20 campaign, firing in 15 times as Bayern won the treble and will be hoping to inspire his side once again this time out, having missed both legs of their quarter-finals defeat to PSG due to a virus.

Bayern were drawn in Group E of this season’s competition, where they will face the likes of Barcelona, Benfica and Dynamo Kyiv, of which Lewandowski will fancy his chances of scoring against each of these opponents.

Lionel Messi comes in third on this list of Champions League top scorer contenders having made a shock move from Barcelona to PSG this summer, which will likely enhance the Argentinian’s chances of going further in this year’s competition due to the strength of the Parisian club’s squad.

The Parc des Princes club have been given a relatively tough task in Group A, as they will take on the likes of Manchester City, RB Leipzig and Club Brugge, although they will more than fancy their chances of progression to the knockout stages, having topped a group containing Manchester United, Leipzig and Istanbul Basaksehir last time out.

Messi has a good record against City, having scored six and assisted three goals in six appearances. The 34-year-old has 120 Champions League goals to his name in his career and is still looking for his first PSG goal having played just 24 minutes for Mauricio Pochettino’s side. Messi has finished as the top scorer in this competition six times, most recently in the 2018/19 season with 12 to his name and will be looking to build from the 38 goals and 14 assists he made in 47 appearances across all competitions for Barcelona last season.

Romelu Lukaku will be hoping to compete to earn himself the Champions League Golden Boot for the first time, having never made it past the Round of 16 in this competition since leaving Chelsea on a permanent deal back in 2014.

The Belgian has scored three goals in three Premier League appearances so far this season, following a debut goal against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, as well as a brace in 3-0 victory against Aston Villa at the weekend, following on from his impressive season at Inter Milan last time around where he managed 24 in 36 league matches.

Lukaku managed four goals in five Champions League appearances for Inter last season with two braces against Borussia Monchengladbach and will be hoping to improve on that tally as his new side Chelsea face the likes of Juventus, Malmo and Zenit St Petersburg in Group H.

Kylian Mbappe is priced at 8/1 to be the Champions League’s top scorer having finished as runner-up in the Golden Boot race last season with eight goals, as PSG were beaten semi-finalists to City.

The 22-year-old has started this season in good shape despite heavy rumours that he is looking to join Real Madrid. Mbappe has scored four and assisted two goals in five appearances having hit the back of the net 42 times and created 11 assists in 47 appearances across all competitions last time out.

As mentioned above, PSG face tricky tests against City, Leipzig and Club Brugge in the group stages, but, with the likes of Mbappe, Messi and Neymar in the front three, it is difficult to see how they will be stopped.

The final player on this list comes in the shape of Cristiano Ronaldo who made a sensational return to Manchester United in the summer transfer window.

Ronaldo made his second debut for the Red Devils at the weekend, scoring a brace against Newcastle United at Old Trafford and will be looking to continue this form throughout the season and especially in the Champions League. The 36-year-old has scored 134 times in European football’s top competition which is the most goals of all time in it and has finished as the top scorer seven times, most recently in the 2017/18 season with 15 goals to his name for Real Madrid as they won their 13th Champions League title.

United’s number seven will be hoping to try and inspire his side to Champions League glory for the first time since the 2007/08 season where he scored eight goals in the competition and has a good chance of boosting his goal tally early on in Group F as they face Young Boys, Atalanta who he scored against three times in six appearances whilst at Juve and Villarreal who the 36-year-old forward has managed 13 goals in 19 against across his career.
