Maxwel Cornet Transfer News & Odds

As Burnley were relegated on the last day of the season, their move to the Championship opens the floodgates to potential buyers. One of the standout players for Burnley this season has been versatile winger and full-back Maxwel Cornet.

Marseille 10/1
Leeds United 16/1

West Ham Odds: 7/2

West Ham reached the Europa League Semi-final last season, where The Hammers fell at the last hurdle losing 3 - 1 on aggregate to eventual winners Eintracht Frankfurt. The focus on the Europa League meant that The Hammers finished in the Europa Conference League place, but strong signings like Cornet could allow West Ham to flourish in the league or go all the way in a European competition.

Cornet would join a team with an already stacked frontline that includes Jarrod Bowen who scored 18 goals this season, Michail Antonio who scored 13 and Said Benhrahma who contributed 11. However, when put into a more attacking team, Cornet may excel. The Ivory Coast international scored nine in the 2021/22 season for a Burnley team that only scored 34 goals for the entire season.

Overall, if West Ham want to go back to challenging the traditional ‘top six’ for the Champions League places, the addition of a promising winger like Cornet wouldn’t be a bad move for David Moyes’ side.

Everton Odds: 9/2

Everton are reportedly interested in signing the Ivorian as Frank Lampard looks to find a replacement for Andros Townsend.

The former Crystal Palace man will be out of action for a prolonged period of time having suffered an ACL injury, meaning that the Toffees will likely look to add another winger to their ranks for the 2022/23 season.

Cornet could be an ideal replacement for Townsend as he is versatile and would likely fill the Englishman’s goal void having managed nine last campaign at Burnley, on top of the fact that the Toffees need more goals in general having only found the back of the net 43 times in 38 matches, the fifth-worst goal tally of any club in the division.

Everton are priced at 9/2 to sign Cornet.

Newcastle United Odds: 9/2

The new era of Newcastle United under their new Saudi ownership seems to be focusing in on young talent that could lay the foundations for years to come. After the takeover and some January acquisitions, Newcastle quite comfortably stayed in the Premier League, finishing 11th and 14 points away from the relegation zone.

Cornet could emulate Chris Wood and make the move from Burnley to Newcastle, especially since the speculation about Miguel Almiron’s future at the club. The Paraguayan only scored a single goal in the 2021/22 season, and has only scored nine in his entire Newcastle career - which spans 110 appearances.

In stark comparison, Cornet scored nine goals just this season, which would make the Ivory Coast international a big upgrade for Eddie Howe and Newcastle if they were to swoop in for the Burnley winger.

Cornet is priced at 9/2 to follow Wood to Newcastle from Burnley.

Leicester City Odds: 6/1

Leicester had a somewhat disappointing Premier League season. The Foxes finished eighth, four points off West Ham in the Europa Conference League place, the very same competition Brendan Rodgers’ men crashed out of at the Semi-final stage.

Cornet’s one season in the Premier League with Burnley means that the 25-year-old is already adapted to the challenging English football and should be able to slot into a Premier League team without too much difficulty. Cornet’s nine goals this season would’ve put him fifth-highest scorer at Leicester behind James Maddison (18 goals), Jamie Vardy (17 goals) as well as Harvey Barnes and Patson Daka who both scored 11 goals.

Current winger Ademola Lookman, who scored eight goals for The Foxes this season, was only on loan from Bundesliga club RB Leipzig, so Cornet could be a replacement for him if Leicester are unable to make his loan a permanent signing.

Leicester are priced at 6/1 to acquire Cornet for the 2022/23 season.

Marseille Odds: 10/1

Marseille finished a strong second place in Ligue 1, 15 points adrift from champions PSG and two points clear of third-place Monaco. This second-place finish secured Champions League football for Marseille for the first time since 2020. Being back in the pinnacle of European football will mean that the French team will need reinforcements, which may come in the form of Cornet.

Cornet has previous experience in the French league which means if he did make the move from Burnley to Marseille it would be unlikely that he’d need a long transition period. The Ivory Coast man played for both Metz and Lyon where he made 23 appearances for The Maroons and 184 for Les Gones.

Marseille’s top scorer, Dimitri Payet scored 16 goals in 42 games this season. Though Cornet only scored nine in comparison, he did it in 28 games. This suggests that in a team like Marseille, Cornet may be able to vastly improve his goal return.

Marseille are priced at 10/1 to sign Cornet this summer.

Leeds United Odds: 16/1

Leeds narrowly avoided relegation this season, a 2 - 1 win against Brentford on the last day and Burnley losing 2 - 1 to Newcastle sealing Jesse Marsch’s men safety. To avoid such a relegation scrap next season, Leeds will need to strengthen in a lot of areas on the pitch. The potential departure of Raphinha means that attack is one of these areas, which is where Cornet may come in.

Raphinha was Leeds’ top scorer this season with 11 goals in 36 games, which averages out to 0.33 goals per 90 minutes, a good return for the Brazilian. Cornet, on the other hand, has nine goals in only 28 games, making his average goals per 90 minutes 0.43, a return that could increase if given more game time.

Overall, the addition of Cornet to the Leeds squad could strengthen it, something the Elland Road faithful will be hoping for as they look to avoid such a close flirtation with relegation back to the Championship.

Cornet is priced at 16/1 to make the switch from Turf Moor to Elland Road.
