Both Tottenham and Aston Villa are fighting for a Champions League place this season. Villa currently occupy fourth position, and are five points ahead of this weekend’s opponents, though Spurs do have a game in hand.

Unai Emery’s side have exceeded expectations this season, as they made an excellent start which saw them amongst the top three early on. They fell back a little, but are still in a great spot to enter Europe’s premier competition next season. Similarly, Tottenham have been inconsistent of late, but given the departure of Harry Kane in the summer and the arrival of new boss Ange Postecoglou, they have done well to remain firmly in the race for a Champions League spot, especially having suffered numerous injuries to key players.

This will be an intriguing match between two teams who come into it on the back of victories. Spurs beat Crystal Palace 3-1 at home, whilst Villa scored a late goal to win 3-2 at Luton. Both sides have great attacking talent, but struggle to keep the ball out of the net. The pair have kept just four clean sheets in the league between them since the beginning of December. Ollie Watkins is the division’s second-highest scorer with 16. Heung-Min Son is not far behind with 13.

Since 2015, Villa and Spurs have met in the Premier League 12 times. This weekend’s visitors edge the head-to-head, winning seven and losing five. This includes five consecutive victories between 2015 and 2021, but Villa have enjoyed more recent success, winning the last three meetings. The reverse fixture earlier this season ended in a 2-1 win for Emery at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Giovani Lo Celso opened the scoring, but goals from Pau Torres and Watkins turned it around.

            Form Guide

            Aston Villa Form Guide:

In their last six games, Aston Villa have won three and lost two. After being defeated in their first two games of this stretch, Villa have recovered to take three in a row. It started with them exiting the FA Cup at the fourth round, as they lost to Chelsea in a replay at Villa Park. The visitors took a commanding 3-0 lead, before Moussa Diaby scored a late consolation. Their next game was another home game, this time against Man United in the Premier League. Rasmus Hojlund put United in front, but Douglas Luiz put the hosts back on level terms. However, Scott McTominay struck late to take all three points.

They returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory at Fulham. The in-form Ollie Watkins grabbed his side’s first, but they were pegged back by Rodrigo Muniz midway through the second half. Watkins then completed a brace to send the team home with maximum points. Another win followed, at home to Nottingham Forest. They took an early 2-0 lead, before adding a third prior to half-time. Forest threatened a comeback as they pulled one back deep into first-half stoppage time, and then grabbed another just after the restart thanks to Morgan Gibbs-White. However, this was as good as it got for Forest as Leon Bailey scored a fourth to put the game away.

A 3-2 win at Luton last weekend extended their winning streak to three, though they left it late to win. A Watkins double put them in front, but Tahith Chong and Carlton Morris scored to tie the game. Luton were on top and had looked more likely to score the winner, but it was substitute Lucas Digne who stepped up in the 88th minute to take home three points.

On Thursday night, Villa were held to a 0-0 draw against Ajax at the Johan Cruijff Arena in the first leg of the Europa Conference League Round of 16 tie.

            Tottenham Form Guide:

In their last five games, Tottenham have won three, lost one and drawn one. Spurs’ most recent outing came at home against Crystal Palace, in which they won 3-1. However, it was not as simple as the scoreline suggests as they had to come from behind late on. Eberechi Eze put the visitors ahead shortly into the second half, before Timo Werner and Christian Romero scored twice in three minutes to turn the game on its head. The game was put to bed as Heung-Min Son added a third with a few minutes remaining.

This followed a two-week break as Chelsea were in Carabao Cup final action, who they were supposed to face last weekend. This means that they had a long time to reflect on a 2-1 loss they suffered at home to Wolves. Joao Gomes scored a brace either side of a Dejan Kulusevski equaliser to condemn the hosts to defeat. A third home game against Brighton saw them on the right side of a 2-1 result, though they left it very late to beat the Seagulls. Pascal Gross put Brighton ahead from the spot, which was cancelled out by Pape Matar Sarr. With the game heading for a draw, Brennan Johnson gave Spurs the lead in the 96th minute.

It was Tottenham who had experienced late heartbreak against Everton as a 94th-minute goal from Jarrad Branthwaite made it 2-2 as the points were shared, in what was their only away game in this stretch. This period of games began with a win at home to Brentford, as they once again came from behind to pick up all three points.

            Footy Accumulators Prediction

In what is a huge game for both sides, we expect this to be a close game. Villa are strong at home, only losing twice, but Spurs have also lost the same number of games away. However, they have five draws on the road this season, and this weekend will see them pick up another one. We predict: Aston Villa 2-2 Tottenham
