Brighton vs Manchester United: Preview, Prediction & Betting Tips

Manchester United make the trip to the coast to take on Brighton this Sunday in the last weekend of the Premier League season. United are still looking to grab European football whereas Brighton are looking to secure a top half finish.

            Date: 19/05/2024

            Kick off time: 16:00

            Location: The Amex

Following their recent win over Newcastle United, Man United need to win their last game of the season to try and get any form of European football while hoping for Brentford to do them a favour against Newcastle at the Gtech Community Stadium. Brighton, however, need a win to stay above Bournemouth and Crystal Palace.

Brighton currently sit 10th in the Premier League going into the last game of the season. In 37 games, The Seagulls have 12 wins, 12 draws and 13 losses, leaving them on 48 points, equal with Bournemouth.

The Seagulls have been inconsistent in front of goal this season, scoring 55 goals in 37 games, an average of 1.48 goals a game. This inconsistency is also present at the other end of the pitch, conceding 60 goals and keeping just six clean sheets.

Manchester United, on the other hand, currently sit eighth going into the last game of the season. The Red Devils have 17 wins, six draws and 14 losses in 37 games which leaves them on 57 points, three points behind Chelsea and level on points with Newcastle.

The Red Devils have also been patchy in front of goal this season, scoring 55 goals in 37 games which is an average of 1.48 goals a game. United have also struggled defensively, conceding 58 goals and keeping eight clean sheets.

Brighton and Manchester United have met 32 times in their histories, with the first meeting coming back in the 1909 FA Cup. United have the better record in the fixture with 20 wins in comparison to Brighton’s seven wins, the other five games ending in a draw.

The last five games in this fixture have seen four wins for Brighton and one win for United in the FA Cup. Two of the last four games in this fixture have seen both sides on the scoresheet.

            Recent Form

In their last six games in all competitions, Brighton have one win, two draws and three losses.

After a goalless first half, Burnley opened the scoring in the 74th minute through Josh Brownhill. However, just five minutes later, an own goal from Arijanet Muric rescued a 1 - 1 draw for Brighton.

The visit from Man City did not see Brighton back to winning ways. A goal from Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring and a brace from Phil Foden put Brighton 3 - 0 down at halftime. Julian Alvarez added another in the second half to give Man City the 4 - 0 win.

Another big loss for Brighton came against Bournemouth. Brighton had just one shot on target in 70% of the possession, as Marcos Senesi, Enes Unal and Justin Kluivert all scored in the 3 - 0 win for Bournemouth.

However, Brighton finally bounced back with a big win over Aston Villa. Villa had just one shot on target as Joao Pedro found the back of the net in the 87th minute to give Brighton the 1 - 0 win.

Joel Veltman opened the scoring for Brighton in the 18th minute but Sean Longstaff equalised in the first half added time. However, neither side could find another goal and had to settle for the 1 - 1 draw.

Brighton suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Chelsea on Wednesday night as goals from Cole Palmer and Christopher Nkunku gave the visitors all three points.

In their last six games in all competitions, Manchester United have three wins, one draw and two losses.

In the FA Cup Semi Final, Man United took on Championship side Coventry. Scott McTominay opened the scoring for United and Maguire doubled the lead before halftime. Bruno Fernandes added a third on the hour, but late goals from Ellis Simms and Callum O’Hare and a 95th minute penalty from Haji Wright forced a 3 - 3 draw. The subsequent penalty shootout saw Ben Sheaf and O’Hare both miss to give United the 4 - 2 win.

Back in the Premier League, Man United hosted Sheffield United. Jayden Bogle opened the scoring for The Blades but Maguire scored to make it level at halftime. Ben Brereton Diaz regained the lead for Sheffield United but a brace from Fernandes and a goal from Rasmus Hojlund gave Man United the 4 - 2 win.

Antony opened the scoring for United with just ten minutes to go but an 87th minute penalty from Zeki Amdouni rescued a big 1 - 1 draw for Burnley.

In a massive shock, United slumped to a massive loss at Selhurst Park. United had just two shots on target as Michael Olise grabbed a brace and was joined on the scoresheet by Jean-Philippe Mateta and Tyrick Mitchell in the 4 - 0 win for Crystal Palace.

United had just two shots on target against Arsenal as Leandro Trossard scored the only goal of the game in the 20th minute to give Arsenal the 1 - 0 win.

Man United finished their home campaign on a high note on Wednesday night as they beat Newcastle United 3-2 at Old Trafford thanks to goals by Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund. They need to win against Brighton to avoid recording their worst-ever Premier League points tally of 58 points, the same amount they managed in 2021/22.

            Footy Accumulators Prediction

Both sides have had a somewhat underwhelming season and are likely to go out on a draw. Pedro and Fernandes are also likely to get their names on the scoresheet. Brighton 2 - 2 Manchester United
