The 39-year-old arrives with a good reputation from Sporting Lisbon, where he managed to win a total of five trophies in just shy of five years in charge, while breaking the Lions’ 19-year title drought during the 2020/21 season.

Ruben Amorim’s first three league matches will see the Red Devils travel to the likes of Ipswich Town and Arsenal on either side of a home fixture against Everton.
The Red Devils sit just four points adrift of fifth-place Brighton & Hove Albion and will play the likes of Ipswich (a), Everton (h), Arsenal (a), Nottingham Forest (h), Manchester City (a) and AFC Bournemouth (h) between now and Christmas Day.
Manchester United have had a slow and dismal start to the 2024/25 Premier League season, however, they are just four points behind the likes of third-place Chelsea, showing that there is scope for a lot of improvement on their current league position of 13th.
Although Amorim has only ever managed in Portugal since becoming a manager in July 2018 with Casa Pia, the 39-year-old’s worst win rate is actually in his last job, having won 164 matches from 231, equating to a 71% win percentage. Between spells at Casa Pia and Sporting, Amorim managed Sporting Braga’s B team as well as their senior side.
United are just four points behind third-place Chelsea, which shows just how tight the Premier League table is.
If Ruben Amorim’s men can accumulate a sufficient number of points against Ipswich, Everton, Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Manchester City and AFC Bournemouth then there is every chance that they can leapfrog at least nine of the ten teams in front of them.
These odds are arguably better value than Manchester United to win their first three matches under Amorim, as it also adds the Red Devils’ home fixture against Nottingham Forest, a side which they will expect to beat.
Manchester United are already in the League Cup quarter-finals where they will face Tottenham Hotspur (a) on 19th December. United managed to win the Carabao Cup during the 2022/23 season when they beat Newcastle United 2-0 in the final.
Meanwhile, on paper, the Old Trafford club arguably have the strongest squad in the Europa League, meaning that they will be expected to challenge for this competition, especially when considering that Champions League sides can no longer drop down into the Europa League knockout stages.
United will enter the FA Cup in the Third Round, which is yet to be drawn due to the Second Round taking place on the week commencing 25th November.
The Red Devils are the holders of the FA Cup following their sensational run in the 2023/24 campaign that saw them defeat the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.
As previously mentioned, United will fancy their chances of winning the Europa League, while also considering this as another viable route for Champions League qualification - similarly to their 2016/17 triumph in this competition under José Mourinho.
United have a good record in domestic cup competitions of late, as they’ve made it to three of the last four domestic cup finals, having won the League Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024 while suffering a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to local rivals Manchester City in the 2023 FA Cup final.
The Old Trafford club are yet to achieve the feat of winning both domestic cup competitions in the same campaign. Could Ruben Amorim become the first manager in the club’s history to do this?
Inevitably, United’s odds are high to break what will be their 12-year title drought come the end of the 2024/25 campaign, especially when considering the fact that they sit 13 points adrift of Liverpool after 11 matches.
Amorim has shown that he can work his magic, having won a cup in just 13 games as manager of Sporting Braga, before going on to break Sporting Lisbon’s 19-year title drought in his first full season as Lions’ manager back in 2020/21.
