In the run-up to those matches, Leverkusen managed to beat FC Koln 3-2 in the DFB Pokal to advance to the semi-finals of that competition after earning a 3-1 victory against Hoffenheim thanks to goals by Victor Boniface, Jeremie Frimpong and Schick.
