The Cardiff City Stadium is the location for the clash between Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday this Saturday. Both sides haven’t had a great start to their seasons so the potential for a haul of three points is very important for both.
Cardiff sit 20th in the Championship currently with just one point to their name in three games this season. With one draw and two losses so far this season, Cardiff are one of four teams on one point. However, The Blue Birds have the best goal difference of those teams with a negative two goal difference.
The Blue Birds opened their season away to recently relegated from the Premier League Leeds. Cardiff took a 2 - 0 lead going into halftime through goals from Josh Bowler and Ike Ugbo. However, an early second half goal from Liam Cooper and a 95th minute equaliser from Crysencio Summerville saw the game finish 2 - 2, giving Cardiff their one point. Cardiff then suffered back-to-back 2 - 1 defeats. QPR raced to a 2 - 0 lead through Sinclair Armstrong and Kenneth Paal, with Ugbo’s late goal not enough to grab a draw.
The most recent game was the other 2 - 1 loss, this time to Leicester. The teams went into halftime at 1 - 1 with goals from Wanya Marcal-Madivadua and Aaron Ramsey. Summer loan signing Cesare Casadei then grabbed all three points for The Foxes with his goal in the second minute of added time. Also in added time, Mahlon Romeo was shown his second yellow card of the day and was dismissed.
Sheffield Wednesday has had the worst start to the Championship, sitting 24th and rock bottom of the table. In three games, The Owls have suffered three losses and have only scored three goals and have conceded seven goals.
The Owls’ first defeat of the season came in their opening game against Southampton. Adam Armstrong gave The Saints an early lead that they carried into halftime. Lee Gregory got Sheffield Wednesday back into the game but Che Adams wrapped up the 2 - 1 win for Southampton late in the game. Next was a trip to Hull City where goals from Juan Delgado and Michael Smith weren’t enough to prevent the 4 - 2 loss to The Tigers.
Most recently was the visit from Preston North End. In a somewhat even game, Wednesday had more of the possession, but Liam Lindsay’s goal was the only difference in the 1 - 0 win for Preston.
Cardiff and Sheffield Wednesday have met 73 times in their histories with the first coming back in 1920. There’s not much between the two sides with Cardiff beating The Owls 27 times but Sheffield Wednesday beating The Blue Birds 28 times. The other 18 games finished in a share of the points.
In their last five meetings, Wednesday have won twice, Cardiff have won once and there have been two draws. However, with their nightmare start to the season, the win may swing Cardiff’s way this weekend.
