Elland Road hosts Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday this weekend in the Championship. Both sides sit in the bottom half of the Championship table with Leeds looking for promotion back to the Premier League and Sheffield Wednesday looking to get their first points of the season, a win is massively important.
Leeds currently sit 13th in the Championship after four games. The Whites have one win, two draws and one loss, leaving them with five points. Though Leeds have scored seven goals this season, they have also conceded seven leaving them with an underwhelming goal difference of zero.
The Whites opened their season with a draw against Cardiff. Leeds came back from a 2 - 0 lead with Liam Cooper and Crysencio Summerville pulling it back to 2 - 2. Next was a trip to Birmingham where a clutch extra time penalty converted by Lukas Jutkiewicz gave The Blues the 1 - 0 win. Leeds would have to wait through another match before they got their win, this time drawing 1 - 1 with West Brom, Luke Ayling getting the goal. Latest was finally the time for their win, coming against Ipswich. In a seven goal thriller, Georginio Rutter, Wifried Gnoto, Joel Piroe and Luis Sinisterra all scored to give Leeds the 4 - 3 win.
Leeds travelled to Salford City for the Second Round of the League Cup. Pascal Struijk equalised in the 76th minute for Leeds but The Whites couldn’t find a winner sending the tie to penalties. In a long shootout Jamie Shackleton and Rutter both missed giving Salford the 9 - 8 win.
Sheffield Wednesday have had a nightmare start to the season. The Owls are the only team without a point this season and sit rock bottom of the Championship.
The Owls hosted Southampton for their first game of the season. Lee Gregory scored Wednesday’s first goal of the season to equalise but a late Che Adams goal gave The Saints the 2 - 1 win. The first away trip was to Hull, where despite goals from Juan Delgado and Michael Smith, The Tigers took a 4 - 2 win. Preston then visited Hillsborough where Liam Lindsay scored the one goal of the game and gave Preston the 1 - 0 win. The last Championship action for The Owls was against Cardiff. Barry Bannan equalised in the 76th minute as Wednesday were on course for their first point, but Ryan Wintle’s penalty in the 98th minute gave Cardiff the 2 - 1 win.
Sheffield Wednesday hosted League Two Mansfield Town in the Second Round of the League Cup. Anthony Musaba scored in the first half for The Owls but Rhys Oates equalised for Mansfield. The tie finished 1 - 1 sending it to penalties. Liam Palmer and Will Vaulks both missed as Mansfield won 5 - 4.
Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday will meet for their 100th game against each other this weekend. The hosts have a slightly better record in the fixture with 39 wins in comparison to Wednesday’s 34 wins. There have also been a high volume of draws in the fixture with 26, two of those coming in the last five games.
