Plymouth Argyle will welcome Cardiff City to Home Park this weekend with the two sides now in the bottom half of the table after a rough start to 2024 sees only the Bluebirds get a win on the board in the league.
Cardiff's sole victory this calendar year saw them defeat the struggling Queens Park Rangers 2-1 down at Loftus Road. Dimitrios Goutas scored that day alongside a finish from Perry Ng on his return from injury. QPR saw most of the ball that day, but with 10 shots and five of those hitting the target for Cardiff, they narrowly left London with three points.
On the other hand, a 4-0 battering from the relegation-fighting Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup third round two weeks ago means they are out of that competition at the first time of asking this season. It was arguably the worst performance of the season for Cardiff that day, but this was also matched with a 3-0 defeat for them at home to Leeds United, which was arguably their worst display on home soil this campaign.
Cardiff are now down in 13th after being within touching distance of the playoffs spots. Nevertheless, despite sitting in the bottom half of the table, Erol Bulut's men are adrift of the top six by only three points.
Plymouth are even further down the table and closer to relegation than the playoffs, as they are only three above this spot. On the other hand, given the nature of the Championship, the club are eight points clear of Sheffield Wednesday in 22nd and also 10 behind the playoff positions.
Unlike Cardiff, however, the Pilgrims are into the next round of the FA Cup after defeating Sutton United 3-1 at Home Park. Luke Cundle got the ball rolling that day before another goal each from Ryan Hardie and Morgan Whittaker
