Southampton vs. Sheffield Wednesday Prediction, Tips & Stats

Southampton continue to chase down Ipswich Town in the EFL Championship as they face Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.

Southampton currently sit 3rd in the EFL Championship with fifteen wins, seven draws and four losses from twenty-six games this season.

The Saints are having an excellent campaign under manager Russell Martin and are charging towards the automatic promotion places having closed a big gap that separated them and Ipswich Town.

They're coming into this game in outstanding form, unbeaten in their last nineteen games having won four of their last five.

Their latest league game was, though, a somewhat disappointing result as they were held to a 1-1 draw away at Norwich City, with Adam Armstrong's opener on 70 minutes cancelled out by Josh Sargent just eight minutes later.

Martin's side did immediately get to winning ways, however, as they hammered Walsall 4-0 in the FA Cup last weekend, with goals from Ryan Fraser (X2), Sékou Mara and Che Adams enough to seal progression to the fourth round at the expense of an in form Walsall side.

The Saints have been very, very strong at St. Mary's this season and the peak of their home form has largely come in their most recent games as they enter this one having won their last eight in a tow on home soil, conceding just one goal in their last five home games.

Southampton are looking odds on to overtake Ipswich at any point in the coming weeks and, unless they're facing a Leicester or a Leeds away from home, simply don't look like losing.

They're facing a potentially tricky opponent in this one but they're likely to take all three points.

Sheffield Wednesday currently sit 22nd in the EFL Championship with six wins, four draws and sixteen losses from twenty-six games this season.

The Owls troubles have been well publicised this season, but they finally look on the right under promising young manager Danny Röhl track after a nightmare start to the season.

They're entering this game in very good form having won all of their last three games, the most recent of which was a 4-0 win over Cardiff City in the FA Cup.

The win over Cardiff came via goals from Josh Windass, Liam Palmer and Mallik Wilks, along with a Cardiff own goal, and represented another encouraging performance under Röhl, further demonstrating the club's dramatic turnaround under his tutelage.

This one is likely a step too far for the Owls given the standard of the opposition, but their only goal this season is to remain in the Championship and if they continue as they are then that's exactly what they'll do.

For our Southampton vs. Sheffield Wednesday prediction, we're going for a 3-1 win for the home side.
