Sunderland vs Rotherham Prediction, Tips & Stats

Sunderland are back at the Stadium of Light for the third game this season already after a loss last weekend with Rotherham United up next for the Black Cats after a dreadful start for the away side this campaign.

Rotherham have struggled tremendously already this season, drawing with Blackburn Rovers last time out after also receiving yet another red card. Fred Omyedinma was sent off that day after two yellow cards in the space of a few seconds, as he also scored just two minutes earlier - Hakeen Odoffin scored that day too.

Rotherham did manage to beat Morecambe in the League Cup two weeks ago, but this did only come through penalties with the club drawing 1-1 in regular time. Joshua Kayode scored that day, but this does now mean three games down and three winless games for Matt Taylor's side.

Rotherham were also smashed on the opening day by Stoke City with a 4-1 battering after a goal from Lee Peltier, as Cafu was also sent off that day.

As for Sunderland, they were beaten on the road last weekend with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Preston North that saw Jack Clarke net a penalty.

Sunderland also lost their EFL Cup first round encounter with Crewe Alexandra that saw Chris Rigg score in the second half before a penalty shootout defeat. Worse yet, the Black Cats also lost their other game at the Stadium of Light this season with an opening day defeat against Ipswich Town where Dan Niel scored.

          Rotherham team news

Rotherham have had two red cards in the first two Championship games of the season, as Cafu was sent off in the loss to Stoke City. He has returned to the side, however, but Fred Onyedinma received two yellow cards in the space of a few seconds last weekend against Blackburn, as he also scored just two minutes earlier - he misses this game.

Joshua Kayode could come into the set up now, with Georgie Kelly likely to get more minutes alongside Sean Morrison. Josh Hugill and Ben Wiles should remain in the attack with Cafu back in midfield.

          Sunderland team news

Trai Hume has returned to the squad after his red card against Ipswich Town on the opening weekend. Daniel Ballard was booked for the second league game in a row last time out and likely stays alongside Cirkin and O'Nien. Ekwah and Neil are set to feature in the midfield once more with Jack Clarke and Jobe Bellingham set to carry on in attacking midfield alongside Patrick Roberts. Ross Stewart is still out injured as his injury woes continue, so Bradley Dack should start here with Luis Semedo set to feature at some stage too. We expect to see Alex Pritchard and Abdoullah Ba at some stage too.
