Two of League One's most talked-about teams will meet on the penultimate game of the season as Charlton Athletic play hosts to the play-off hopefuls Lincoln City, who recently guaranteed themselves a spot in the knockout round of the play-offs.
Lincoln’s move up the English football pyramid has bee nothing short of spectacular, having gone from non-league to a chance to move into the Championship within a few seasons. The club are currently sat in fourth, level on points with third-placed Sunderland, but with this game in hand, they can leapfrog the Black Cats and secure their highest-placed finish in the club’s history.
They met Peterborough United in League One last time out, where a thrilling 3-3 draw and a 96th-minute finish from Jonson Clarke-Harris secured promotion into the second tier for the Posh. Lincoln played their part, however, and with another three goals that day, with a win here, they will be the third top scorers in League One this campaign.
As for Charlton, their hopes of a play-off spot have gradually disintegrated the past few weeks, but with their last two games picking up two points, the London outfit are now back within Portsmouth and the play-off places.
Charlton are still four points behind the sixth-placed south coast side, but with this game in hand, they can move within one point and have everything to play for in the final game of the League One season. However, Pompey still have control and a win for Charlton would make for an incredibly interesting final game of the campaign this weekend.
This is a tough game to call, though. Lincoln would love to finish third and jump above Sunderland, however, with their play-off place guaranteed, this midweek clash might allow for them to rest a few star players and allow for Charlton to take all three points. With this said, we're expecting a win for the Londoners.
