Newcastle vs Arsenal Prediction

Heading into the second-leg, Newcastle holds a 2-0 lead and will have to make a definitive choice of whether to defend their lead, or kill off the tie itself, meaning that this could be an awkward game for the Magpies, especially if Arsenal manage to take a 1-0 lead and put pressure on their goal.

Newcastle’s last two home performances against Fulham and Bournemouth could potentially cast doubt in the minds of their players should they concede a goal, having suffered 2-1 and 4-1 defeats to those opponents. On top of this, Arsenal will be full of confidence heading into this game having thrashed Manchester City 5-1 at the Emirates Stadium at the weekend.

The Over 2.5 Goals market has come off in all of Newcastle’s last five matches, as well as in four of Arsenal’s last five. We predict that the Gunners will win on the night, but, exit the competition via a 3-2 aggregate scoreline.

Prediction: Newcastle 1-2 Arsenal

Newcastle vs Arsenal Prediction & Preview

Newcastle host Arsenal at St James’ Park in what could be an intriguing contest due to the contrast in form between the two sides since the first leg took place on 7th January.

Date: 05/02/2025

Location: St James’ Park

Time: 8pm

The Magpies hold a 2-0 lead heading into this match following their sensational win at the Emirates Stadium in early January, where both Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon got on the scoresheet in what was a memorable night for Eddie Howe’s side.

Newcastle will be desperate to reach the final of this competition having finished as runner-up in the 2022/23 edition to Manchester United, in what was the club’s first domestic cup final since 1999, where they were also ironically beaten by the Red Devils. Howe will be determined to see his side break a trophy drought that stretches all the way back to 1969 when they won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

The Toon Army’s road to the semi-finals started back in late August when they beat Nottingham Forest on penalties after a 1-1 draw, while since then, they have beaten the likes of AFC Wimbledon (1-0), Chelsea (2-0) and Brentford (3-1).

On the other hand, Arsenal are aiming to win this competition for just the third time in their history, while also aiming to win their first trophy under Mikel Arteta since the end of the 2019/20 season.

Arsenal are going well in the league at present as they sit second in the table, however, their main obstacle is the irresistible form that Arne Slot’s Liverpool find themselves in, with the Reds from Merseyside sitting six points clear of the Gunners with a game in hand, therefore, adding further importance to this game.

Arteta’s men know that they need to win a trophy sooner rather than later in order to justify themselves as a serious force to be reckoned with, having gone close to winning the Premier League in each of their last two seasons prior to the current campaign.

The Gunners have had an easier run to the semi-finals than the hosts on paper, having earned victories over Bolton Wanderers (5-1), Preston North End (3-0) and Crystal Palace (3-2).

Form Guide

Newcastle

Last time out, Newcastle suffered a shock 2-1 home defeat to Fulham, as second half goals from Raul Jimenez and Rodrigo Muniz flipped the game on its head after Jacob Murphy had given the Magpies a 1-0 lead in the 37th-minute.

Prior to the aforementioned game, Newcastle had earned a 3-1 victory away at bottom of the table Southampton after a disappointing 4-1 home loss to AFC Bournemouth where Justin Kluivert fired in a memorable hat-trick for the Cherries. In the run-up to those matches, Eddie Howe’s side earned 3-0 and 3-1 wins over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bromley.

Arsenal

Arsenal are in superb form, as they’ve won all of their last four matches since drawing 2-2 at home with Aston Villa.

Mikel Arteta’s side managed to earn vital wins over Dinamo Zagreb (3-0) and Girona (2-1) in the Champions League which confirmed their place in the Round of 16. Meanwhile, in the Premier League, the Gunners earned crucial wins over Wolverhampton Wanderers (1-0) and Manchester City (5-1), with Martin Odegaard, Thomas Partey, Miles Lewis-Skelly, Kai Havertz and Ethan Nwaneri all getting on the scoresheet in the latter mentioned match.
