Shrewsbury vs Peterborough Prediction, Tips & Stats

Peterborough United will be aiming to cement their place in the League One playoff places on Friday afternoon as they travel to the Montgomery Waters Meadow to face Shrewsbury.

The home side find themselves in 10th place in the table, having amassed 55 points from their 38 league games so far this season. With only eight games left in this campaign, the nine-point gap between Shrewsbury and the playoff places seems to be too large for them to gain a chance at promotion.

Shrewsbury’s run-in is very challenging as in all of their next six games, they face teams who currently sit above them in the table. However, if Steve Cotterill’s side can get results from these games it may give them a fleeting chance of being involved in the playoff picture heading into the final weekend.

Steve Cotterill’s side come into this game on the back of a poor run of results which has seen them lose three of their last four outings in the league. Last time out, Salop recorded their worst result of the season as they were thrashed 6-0 by Charlton on a miserable day for Shrewsbury.

Miles Leaburn scored twice as Charlton hammered Shrewsbury with Scott Fraser, Albie Morgan, Jes Rak-Sakyi and Macauley Bonne also netting, while a red card for Tom Flanagan put the seal on a miserable day for the Shrews.

Peterborough are currently occupying the final playoff place in League One and are on 64 points, level with both Bolton above them and Derby below them. Evidently, the Posh will need to have a good run-in to ensure that they get a place in the playoffs.

The Posh come into this weekend on the back of an impressive run of form which has seen them win three of their last four outings in the league. Darren Ferguson’s side beat Burton 5-2 and followed this up by keeping clean sheets against Lincoln and Derby in convincing victories.

Shrewsbury have the better form in this fixture’s recent history, having won five of the last eight competitive meetings while Peterborough have only won two. The largest victory to come in this fixture was in October 2020, where the Posh came out 5-1 victors.

These sides last met in the league exactly one month ago in the reverse fixture at London Road. Frankie Kent struck late as Peterborough beat Shrewsbury at London Road. The centre-back struck in the 87th minute to earn a vital victory, heading his second goal of the campaign after substitute Kabongo Tshimanga helped a Joe Ward free-kick into his path.

Peterborough are slightly favoured at the bookies ahead of this clash and are currently priced @ 5/4, whilst a home win for Peterborough is priced @ 2/1 and a draw is @ 9/4.

We are backing Peterborough to win to nil because their recent form indicates that they are a very hard side to break down, having recorded three consecutive clean sheets in the league. If this game is to follow a similar pattern to the reverse fixture, it can be expected that the Posh will control possession for large spells of the game.

            Shrewsbury Team News

Tom Bayliss is set to miss the remainder of Shrewsbury’s season after he ruptured the ligaments in his ankle during the game against Morecambe. He joins Dan Udoh and George Nurse who will also be in the treatment room for the rest of the campaign.

            Peterborough Team News

Peterborough have not reported any new injury concerns ahead of this weekend’s matchup. Darren Ferguson is unlikely to ring the changes to the side which has started the past two league games.
