The Eco-Power stadium is the venue for a mid-table battle in League Two, as Doncaster Rovers host AFC Wimbledon on Saturday afternoon.
The hosts currently occupy 13th place in the league table, having amassed 47 points from their 34 games so far this campaign. There is still a distant possibility that Doncaster could gain a place in the playoffs as they are only 9 points behind Salford who are in the final playoff place.
Danny Schofield’s come into this weekend on the back of a poor run of form that has seen them only gain one point from their last four games. This run has included disappointing defeats at the hands of fellow playoff contenders Sutton and Bradford.
Doncaster featured in midweek League Two action on Tuesday evening as they welcomed Harrogate Town to the Eco-Power stadium in a Yorkshire derby. The game looked to be heading towards a goalless draw, however, two late Harrogate goals gave them a 2-0 victory.
This defeat dealt yet another major blow to Doncaster’s playoff ambitions as the teams above them were able to create some breathing room. It seems as though anything but a victory this weekend could all but end any remaining hope that Doncaster may have of snatching a playoff place.
After three consecutive defeats, Wimbledon’s season looks like it will inevitably fizzle out into nothingness as the Dons are currently 16 points above the relegation zone and thirteen points behind the playoffs.
In recent weeks, Wimbledon have recorded disappointing defeats at the hands of Stevenage and Gillingham and have been held to a frustrating draw against Hartlepool. Last Weekend, the Dons were unable to take advantage of an early lead as they were beaten 3-1 to Mansfield.
Wimbledon’s away form has been particularly uninspiring in the new year and Johnnie Jackson’s side are without an away win since they defeated Colchester on the 29th of December, a run which has included three losses and two draws.
In recent years, this has been a fixture that Doncaster have struggled in, having won just once in their last seven league meetings with Wimbledon. That win came in January 2021, where Doncaster won 2-0.
The points were shared in a highly entertaining game when these sides met at The Cherry Reds Record Stadium in the reverse fixture. A second-half double by Brentford loanee Nathan Young-Coombes looked certain to have won the match for the Dons as they held a two goal lead heading into the final 5 minutes.
However, a thumping hit by Tommy Rowe after 87 minutes gave Donny a lifeline. And there was enough time left for them to snatch a point as Williams rose to head in Adam Clayton's flicked-on corner four minutes into added time.
Doncaster are home favourites at the bookies ahead of this weekend’s clash and are currently priced @ 5/4, whilst an away victory for Wimbledon is priced @ 21/10.
