Gillingham vs. Accrington Prediction, Tips & Stats

Gillingham are looking to continue their excellent start to the season as they face Accrington Stanley in League Two on Saturday afternoon.

Gillingham currently sit 7th in League Two after winning their first game of the season away at Stockport County.

The win was a huge three points for The Gills having been handed a tough assignment on the first day of the season away at a fellow promotion contender, but they got the job done in a fashion that became typical of this Gillingham side at the back end of last season as they utilised their watertight defence while requiring just a solitary Robbie McKenzie strike to seal all three points in a 1-0 win.

Things were about to get a whole lot better for Gillingham and McKenzie, too, as they continued where they left off on Tuesday night in emphatic fashion as they faced Championship club Southampton in the EFL Cup

Facing a side that spent last season in the Premier League, Gillingham put Championship new boys Southampton to the sword with a resounding 3-1 win courtesy of a Robbie McKenzie brace alongside a goal from Ashley Nadesan.

Many fancied Gillingham for promotion this season given they ended the campaign in such good form last time out and they could not have started this season in a more convincing manner.

Accrington are no mugs, but few fancy them to do anything memorable this season and with Gillingham coming into this game with the wind in their sails they should take three points in front of their own fans in this one.

Accrington were relegated from League One last season after finishing 23rd in the League One table following a five-year stay in England's third tier.

It was a rough campaign for a club many feel had been punching above their weight for a number of seasons and few expect them to bounce back this season.

Stanley began proceedings with a resounding 3-0 win over Newport County, a result the came as a surprise to many punters given the pessimistic outlook surrounding Accrington's chances this season.

Stanley followed that game up with an EFL Cup exit at the hands of Bradford City on Tuesday night after falling 5-4 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw.

The result won't concern many involved with the club given it was a much-changed XI and they lost a very tight encounter to one of the league's promotion favourites so attention will now flip to the league this weekend.

On paper it's an exceptionally tough game for Stanley but if they can take three points here then it may force one or two to revise their projections for the Lancashire club.

For our Gillingham vs. Accrington prediction, we're going for a 2-1 win for the home side.

            Gillingham Team News

Robbie McKenzie now has three goals in his first two games and will be looking to continue his excellent form here.

Tom Nichols amassed ten goal contributions for Gillingham last season and is expected to start up top here.

            Accrington Team News

Joe Pritchard continues his recovery from a serious injury and will therefore be unavailable for selection here.

It seems quite likely that manager John Coleman leans on the side of continuity for this game and picks the same XI that started the resounding 3-0 win over Newport County last weekend.
