Newport vs Sutton Prediction, Tips & Stats

Two sides that are both in red-hot form meet at Rodney Parade on Saturday afternoon as Newport are set to host Sutton United.

The hosts have well and truly distanced themselves from the ensuing relegation scrap at the bottom of League Two and now find themselves in 16th place in the table and are 11 points above Crawley Town who occupy 23rd place in the table.

Newport are in the midst of their best run of results of the season and have not lost in their last five league games and have only lost one of their last ten outings. This run has included vital victories against the likes of Swindon and Barrow.

Newport Travelled to Victoria Park on Tuesday evening to face Hartlepool in a vital game in the Pools bid for survival. The game looked to be heading towards a goalless draw as Hartlepool battled hard to preserve their clean sheet in 90 minutes. However, Mickey Demetriou found an injury-time header to fire Newport to their third win in five games.

The recent form of Newport has to be partially put down to Graham Coughlan who has made an instant impact at Rodney Parade since his appointment in mid-October. Newport have only lost two of their eight home games under Coughlan, winning three and drawing three.

Sutton United are currently within touching distance of the playoff places and find themselves in 9th place in the table. The U’s have amassed 47 points following 13 wins, 8 draws, and 11 defeats from their 32 league games so far this campaign.

Matt Gray’s side are undefeated in their last five league games and have recorded impressive victories against the likes of Swindon, Doncaster and Harrogate. Pleasingly for Matt Gray, his side has managed to keep three clean sheets in their last five outings.

Last time out, Sutton welcomed Doncaster to Gander Green Lane, a side who came into the tie on the back of three consecutive victories. Two second-half goals proved the difference between the sides as Coby Rowe and David Ajiboye secured all three points for the U’s.

These sides have only met in the Football League on three occasions, with there being a win for each side and one draw. Newport won their only previous home game against Sutton in December 2021, with Matt Dolan scoring a 90th-minute winner.

The points were shared when these sides met in the reverse fixture on the opening weekend of this campaign. Newport had to come from behind as Omar Bugiel had fired Sutton into a welcome 24th minute lead with a clinical close-range strike. Newport debutant Omar Bogle found an equaliser shortly after as the game finished 1-1.

              Newport Team News

Newport have not reported any new injury concerns ahead of this weekend’s clash. Graham Coughlan is unlikely to ring the changes to the side which defeated Hartlepool in the week.

              Sutton Team News

Omar Bugiel is serving the second of a two match ban that he recieved after reaching ten cautions this season. Louis John looks set to make a return to the match-day squad after he was absent from Suttons game against Doncaster.
